April showers may bring flowers, but at Oakwood there is a lot more blooming for our second grade students. And those students (and teachers too) will take April showers over the snowy winter we had any day! Now that spring is in the air, it can only mean that it is time for one of Oakwood’s annual second-grade traditions –our trip to the Heckscher Museum. Every year, the Heckscher Museum in Huntington, opens up its doors and their new displays and exhibits to our budding second-grade artists.
This year was no exception! The students were given tours of several exhibit rooms where they could look at art pieces up close. They learned about Mr. Heckscher and were able to placed a face with the name when they saw his portrait hanging in the lobby. The students also learned about the beautiful marble fountain in the main lobby featuring replicas of Mr. Heckscher’s grandchildren. And although our students probably had plenty of wishes to make at the fountain, they learned why it was no longer a working structure.
One of this year’s really exciting exhibits was called Long Island’s Best: Young Artists at the Heckscher Museum. This collection featured works from some of Long Island’s best young men and women. The pieces selected to hang in the gallery came from high school students who delivered a variety of artwork good enough to be considered professional. Oakwood’s second-graders were thrilled to hear that maybe one day their very own creations could possibly be chosen for this honor.
Before leaving the museum, the students were given the opportunity to create masterpieces of their very own using a variety of techniques and media. We thank Heckscher Museum for always welcoming Oakwood to their wonderful gallery and allowing our students to experience art first hand!
