It was the rubber match of a 3-game series against evenly matched teams. Senior captain Sean McEntee opened the scoring after Copiague walked Whitman’s #9 hitter allowing McEntee, one of the Wildcats strongest hitters, to smack a 2-RBI single. Freshman pitcher Jared Restmeyer was solid on the mound and Copiague resorted to bunting to get some base runners into scoring position to tie-up the game 2-2. A controversial play at home allowed Copiague the go-ahead run. Senior Julian Kleberg came in for relief and was solid allowing only 1 run keeping it close for the Wildcat hitters.
The team trailed 4-2 going into the bottom of the 7th and Joe DiPiero came to the plate. “Joe’s been great this year, hitting close to a 400 batting average on the season,” said Head Coach Steve Greco. Copiague walked DiPiero, setting up the Wildcats #1 hitter in Josh Shapiro who promptly moved DiPiero to third base on a well placed single.
Jeremy Dalimonte, a Whitman junior, drove in Joe DiPiero for the 1st run of the inning and then, Ryan McAllister had a pinch-hit, walk-off two RBI double to give the Wildcats the win. “I know Ryan hasn’t played a lot but I know he has a good bat and I have confidence in him,” said Coach Greco. “I brought him in and he hit a nice little double in the gap to give us the win. I had the feeling we weren’t done, we had been leaving guys on base, so it was just a matter of time when we broke through.” Julian Kleberg and Jared Restmeyer combined for 9 strikeouts in the 5-4 win.
Congratulations to the whole team on a great win!
