On Thursday, June 16, Oakwood had a wonderful Concert in the Park and SRR Celebration. The morning's rain didn’t diminish our student’s enthusiasm as they assembled in the gym for two performances by the talented “Brady Rymer and the Little Band That Could.” The group led students in a fun and event filled morning that included lots of dancing.

Dance Highlights Spring Concert
The annual Spring Dance Concert at Walt Whitman High School featured one of Long Island's top high school dance programs, directed and choreographed by Susan Turner Radin. “Wednesday night’s dance concert was a perfect example of the magic of performance and creative process because in spite of the challenges, differences, and obstacles we encountered throughout the year, they came together in perfect harmony and gave a fabulous show.” The evening also showcased the award winning Jazz Band and Wind Ensemble, directed by Allan Deitz and, new this year, the Voices of Walt Whitman choral group, directed by Steven Altinel.
The Jazz Band got things off to a great start performing seven numbers from their 2015-2016 repertoire. Whitman’s Dance director, Ms. Susan Turner Radin then introduced several 2016 Dance Awards. Congratulations to six students who were inducted into the National Honor Society for Dance Arts in New York State on May 31, 2016. Soccer Signings
The State Champion Boys Soccer team will be sending graduating seniors to a wide variety of colleges next fall. Just recently we saw two of their stars, Fabrizio Chamorro and Witman Hernandez commit to play at Old Westbury and SUNY Oneonta respectively. “Witman is the most dynamic player we’ve ever had here, and the best striker I have ever coached,” said John DiGiacomo, Whitman’s head varsity coach. “At the forward position, I think ‘bobby’ (Chamorro) will be a spark in the Old Westbury lineup. His size and athleticism will fit well there.”
Congratulations to both of these young men as they carry the Wildcat pride to their respective schools next year.

Birchwood’s Biggest Cut for the Cause
On a recent Monday afternoon, Birchwood’s staff and community families joined in an important event when they decided to pony up and help women fighting cancer.'Beautiful Lengths' is a partnership between Pantene and the American Cancer Society. The role of Pantene is to help women grow long, strong, beautiful hair and provide the funds to turn this hair into free, real-hair wigs for women with cancer. “We wanted to be part of this wonderful cause sponsored by Pantene,” said Birchwood’s Assistant Principal Annie Michaelian. “Girls donated 8 inches of hair, and we invited the boys to ‘Buzz for a Cure,’ thanks to Anthony DeFranco Salon.” Birchwood received 41 hair donations (ponytails) for wig making. Also, 10 boys buzzed their hair to show support.
Great job committee members of Birchwood’s SBM team who organized this successful event: Anthony Ciccarelli, Principal; Annie Michaelian, Assistant Principal; Birchwood teachers: Krista Legge, Kristen Lopez, Ian Denson, and Helma Adde; Paraprofessional Mary Palladino; Students: Gabriel Beickert, Shaelyn Sharpf; and Birchwood Parent: Dayna Cioffi.
Congratulations to the Birchwood School community for coming together for this very worthy cause!

Project Excel Celebrates Successful Year
We enjoyed a special ceremony on Thursday evening June 9th, as our Project Excel program celebrated its culminating activity in the high school performing arts center. Our parents, students, and staff gathered to recognize the wonderful participants and thank our dedicated coordinators, Ian Denson - Birchwood, Maria Colon - Maplewood, Shaka Williams - Silas Wood, Richard Garcia - Stimson, and Roberto Torres - Walt Whitman High School, for all of their outstanding work this year.
District Project Excel Coordinator David Perkins continues to motivate our students, parents and Social Work interns with the powerful message of hard work, commitment, and sacrifice. Mr. Perkins message was accentuated by guest speaker and Detroit Pistons NBA star Tobias Harris. Former Project Excel student Daniel Reyes traveled from Texas to share the good news of his high school graduation, inspire students to press on despite setbacks, and thank our school community for helping him achieve his goals.
The dinner provided by Pollo Campero of Huntington Station, topped off a wonderful evening for our students and families. We thank everyone who supports our Project Excel program and look forward to another fantastic year to come.

He has an impressive weighted average of 98.77. Ariel is a 5th year varsity softball player who’s fielding and power hitting helped her Wildcats make a playoff run this past season. Ariel has a weighted average of 98.65. Congratulations to both of these outstanding student athletes.

Doggone Regents
Walt Whitman High School enlisted the services of some well-trained proctors for the 2016 June Regents. Although short in stature, Ziggy, Chelsea, Nephrititi, and Shally took up their posts near the entrance to the North Gym and stood ready to focus test takers. Unlike most testing monitors whose job it is to maintain exam protocols, these furry workers were in charge of maintaining healthy stress levels. With flapping ears and wagging tails, this canine team hounded students for a smile and a back scratch.
Finals and NYS Regents Exams create enormous stress for high school students. Thanks to a special partnership with Bideawee, Walt Whitman students were treated to these therapy dog sessions; designed to improve the testing experience by reducing test anxiety. As students arrived early for Regents exams, they were treated to some TLC by true professionals.
Special thanks to Bidewee volunteers Tom Tulipan, father of Ziggy and Nephrititi; Nancy Beckmann, mother of Chelsea; and Elaine Bermas, mother of Shally. Thank you to Alicia Ryan, Bidaewee Senior Manager of Volunteer Programs and the WWHS PTA for making this program possible.

Maplewood Graduates 229 Students
Maplewood Intermediate School held their fifth-grade awards assembly on Tuesday, June 21st at Walt Whitman’s North Gymnasium. Maplewood Principal Dr. Vito D’Elia welcomed parents and special guests congratulating the parents, students, and their teachers for their hard work and commitment in making 2015-16 such a successful year.
Walt Whitman Valedictorian Misha Patel, also a Maplewood graduate was a surprise guest speaker. “While sixth-grade will be fun, it’ll also be harder,” said Misha. “Just remember to always put school first, before things like TV or going on the computer. And make sure you try your best in everything you do.”
Dr. D’Elia, along with Assistant Principal Dr. Alison Bruno, greeted each 5th grader with a certificate. Physical Education Awards were given out by Ms. Gross, Mr. Slovak and Mr. Lauria after which Dr. Bruno recognized the many groups that help to make their years at Maplewood such a successful experience. Groups such as the Safety Patrol, Peer Mediation, SBM, and the Student Council were recognized. Dr. Bruno then presented the Presidential Award for Academic Achievement, and Dr. D’Elia the Presidential Award for Academic Excellence.

Birchwood Graduates 218 Students
Birchwood Intermediate School held their fifth-grade awards assembly on Wednesday, June 22nd at Walt Whitman’s North Gymnasium. Birchwood Principal Mr. Anthony Ciccarelli welcomed parents and special guests and thanked the parents, students, and their teachers for their hard work and commitment, and encouraged them to have a safe and wonderful summer.
Principal Ciccarelli, assisted by Assistant Principal Annie Michaelian, introduced each class and as the students took to the risers, their teachers spoke to the assembled Birchwood school community about the year and the hopes and wishes for their new graduates.
Mr. Russell Rufrano and Ms. Erika Barrett gave out Physical Education Awards, after which Ms. Janet Holly, Ms. Sarah Weiss and Dr. Paul Kosak recognized the many students who contributed to the music program including our NYSSMA, SCMEA and LISFA participants. Recognition was given to Student Council, Safety Patrol and Peer Mediation, all of which help to make Birchwood such a successful experience. Principal Ciccarelli then presented the Presidential Awards and Assistant Principal Michaelian presented the Humanitarian Awards before closing the joyful ceremony. “Boys and girls, remember the ‘Birchwood Spirit,’" said Principal Ciccarelli. “Meet every challenge head on and always do your best and you will always be a success.”
Congratulations to the Birchwood graduates and their families... have a fun and safe summer!

Summer Research Paying Big Dividends
Going into summer before their junior year, Mark Theodore Meneses and Amy Chan were selected to participate in an environmental get-away in Riverhead where they were involved with investigative studies of river systems and estuaries. Now, both are ‘rising seniors’ and because of their involvement in the Environmental Science Program the summer before, they have been selected to participate in The Western Exploration for Young Environmental Stewards Program. This will be a fully paid trip to Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming during the last week of September to learn and work alongside scientists and artists studying the ecology of the Grand Canyon.“The fact that I’ve never been to that part of the country will make it a great trip,” said Mark, who some day, would like to become a molecular biologist, with a focus on genetics. “One of the big highlights is that I will be able to meet with one of my favorite instructors from Bozeman Science, Mr. Paul Anderson.”
Ten students are selected for the program each year, based on their exemplary performance in summer science enrichment programs. The program is sponsored by the Avalon Park and Preserve, and partially funded by the Simons Corporation. “The program will provide an outstanding opportunity to build on the scientific, leadership and stewardship skills these two students have been developing over the last few years,” said South Huntington STEM coach Ms. Marijean Scardapane.“With the sciences, it’s one thing to read it in text books or online, but to have a first-hand experience of all the science I’m learning makes it all the better," said Mark. Our other ‘rising senior’ Amy Chan fully agrees with her peer’s assessment. “I never get to travel outside of New York, and it’s exciting to participate in research with wildlife experts in the field,” said Amy who wants to pursue a career in environmental science.
Congratulations to Mark and Amy. We look forward to reporting on the outcome of their trip next fall.
