American Legion Boys State Program Selects Three from Whitman
We are incredibly proud of Walt Whitman students William Burton, Mark Theodore Menses, and James Reilly who have been selected for the Boys State program, which recognizes emerging young leaders throughout the nation. Boys State has been a program of The American Legion since 1935. These talented young men will serve as the face and voice of our school district at the Boys State Conference to be held this summer.
American Legion Boys State is among the most respected educational programs of government instruction for high school students. Each participant becomes a part of the operation of his local, county and state government. At American Legion Boys State, participants are exposed to the rights and privileges, the duties and the responsibilities of a franchised citizen. The training is objective and practical with city, county and state governments operated by the students elected to the various offices. Activities include legislative sessions, court proceedings, law enforcement presentations, assemblies, bands, chorus and recreational programs.
Special thanks to Mr. Charlie Armstrong and his team from the American Legion Greenlawn Post 1244 for making this possible.

Just a Spoonful of Sugar
Science teachers Mr. Marcus Maddy and Jamie Rogers are thrilled to report that a Walt Whitman high school team, comprised of two different classes and a club, entered an international science competition for the very first time… and won first place!“This is our first year entering the Rube Goldberg contest,” said Science Chairperson Marcus Maddy. “Students put a lot of time, effort, brainstorming, problem-solving, and creativity in designing, building and testing their Rube Goldberg machine."
Some of the Whitman students are taking a STEM research course and other students are in the Robotics class and/or Mr. Rogers after school robotics club. This project directly corresponds with the Robotics STEM curriculum. Whitman’s Rube Goldberg machine is based on a Mary Poppins theme. After 50-plus steps the machine ends with a pneumatic device opening Mary Poppins umbrella.
Congratulations students and teachers, Rube Goldberg would be proud.

May Athletes Close-Out Spring Season
Maelyn Latko, a Whitman sophomore is our Female Athlete of the Month for May. “Badminton’s fun, even when you go up against really good teams and lose, I still enjoy the game,” said our sophomore who ended the season with an 8-8 record. Even though the Wildcats season closed at 500, Maelyn and coach Scott Wolf were pleased with the team’s strong showing considering the fact that it was a rebuilding year. Maelyn who also plays Varsity Volleyball and Bowling was awarded All-League for her effort.
For our Male Athlete of the Month, senior Matthew Stockfeder’s final year of high school lacrosse brought some welcomed highlights. “We were the 9-seed and we beat Commack the 8-seed in a thrilling overtime win,” said the Wildcat Midfielder about their first round of the playoffs. “But then we did something that’s never been done in Section XI history and that was beating the number 1-seed West Islip in the second round.” Making the playoff run was significant this year, especially for the seniors. “Many of us have been playing together since the 2nd grade and it’s nice to see hard work come together like that.” Matthew, a 3-year varsity player has been awarded All-Division and All-County. Matthew will be attending St. John’s University in the fall.

Intermediate School Drama and Musical Production
Our Maplewood and Birchwood families "caught the theater bug" this past weekend, as over 100 students strong took to the stage in the first annual intermediate school drama and musical production. This talented group, working under the able leadership of Mr. Slawitsky and Ms. Workman, drew the thunderous applauses of parents, grandparents, family, friends, and staff alike as they laid the foundation of more exciting productions to come. “Our new Musical Theatre Workshops started in the middle of March,” said Mr. Slawitsky. “Maplewood rehearsed on Tuesdays and Birchwood rehearsed on Thursdays, until the final week when both schools rehearsed together.”
With this successful inaugural year starting with an overwhelming number of participants, it is clear that this is a program of great interest. “Our ‘Review’ this first year was a good introduction to doing a show,” said Mr. Slawitsky “Next year we will pick a show with storyline, plot and characters.”

Michael S. Curtin Citizenship Awards
Michael S. Curtin was a Sergeant in the NYPD and on September 11, 2001 tragically perished during the World Trade Center rescue efforts. In Sergeant Curtin's honor, the Michael S. Curtin Awards are presented to students who were nominated by their teachers for demonstrating exemplary citizenship. Rather than emphasizing academics or athletics, these awards focus on character and compassion. They are about how students live their daily lives and how much they do for others without asking for anything in return. They are about what makes Whitman such a special place, and what makes South Huntington such a special community.

Ambassador Program Highlighted
The Board of Education, administration, and staff took great pride last week in recognizing our Ambassadors Club on their important work during this inaugural year. These fine young men and women joined with their teachers to demonstrate the empathy, collective work, and human understanding that make our community so incredibly proud.
The primary goal of the Ambassador program is for students to mentor students with significant disabilities, helping them to develop friendships and social skills, while contributing to the school community. “The student ambassadors develop an understanding, empathy and acceptance of their peers with disabilities,” said Ms. Corrine J. McLaughlin, a Special Education-Life Skills Teacher at Walt Whitman High School. One of the elements within the program is a basketball league comprised of our Ambassadors and their peers in the Special Education Program. Coaches Barbarajean Douglas and Denise Elmore assist Ms. McLaughlin. “The Ambassador mentors were amazing. The pep talks they game the players or the guidance when they assisted them on the court was a true pleasure to watch,” said Coach Douglass. “The friendships that were made among the Ambassadors and the players were so amazing.”
We thank our Ambassadors and appreciate their efforts in exemplifying the very best of our South Huntington Schools. Boy's Lacrosse Makes History
They heard that they were overachievers, but the varsity boy’s lacrosse players believed in their potential. They knew they could run with the best, and this year, they found it in themselves to overcome tremendous odds. “There aren’t enough words to express how I feel about what these kids did this year,” said Varsity Head coach Robert Howell. “Considering some of our weaknesses, we went further than even I thought we might. But the one thing that a coach always asks for, and these guys delivered, is that you go out there and leave it all on the field, and they came off exhausted.”
Without a doubt the Wildcats never quit and they always gave it their best, it was their hard work and commitment that took them far into the playoff bracket. “While there may have been more talented teams in the past, nobody worked harder than these kids and I really respect them for that,” said coach Howell, who celebrated his 100th win this season. “They made this, my last season as head coach, my best season ever.”
Many of the Wildcat players have been playing in the South Huntington Lacrosse Program since the second grade. Some will move on to the next level, and some will recall their senior year as their greatest memory. “To knock off the number one seed in the playoffs has to be the highlight of my career coaching here at Whitman,” added coach Howell. As broadcast on MSG and News12… the Wildcats made lacrosse history going into the second round of the playoffs seeded #9 and knocked off West Islip, the #1 seed. The Wildcats went into the game with a plan that they executed brilliantly and the top-ranked lions answered too little and too late. “In the end, when Stockfeder made that goal, and Shane made that save, and Willie ran it up the field, it was an unbelievable feeling and great win for the team and the program,” said coach Howell.
The Wildcats will graduate eleven seniors this year and a younger group, who experienced first-hand what hard work and dedication brings, will carry the torch as the next generation begins their quest for lacrosse supremacy in one of the top high school lacrosse areas in the nation.
Congratulations to the entire team and retiring head coach Robert Howell. A special thanks to our seniors who gave everything and will always remember what they accomplished: Shane Brennan, Addison Bermudez, Spencer DeRosa, Angelo Gervasio, Scott Manning, CJ Pasterak, Willie Petro, Colin O’Hara, Chris Senecal, Matt Stockfeder, and John Haffner. Thanks as well to our outstanding assistant coaches Matt Lauria and Mike Brennan.
