Research Goes to Next Level
We hear that Ms. Brendel’s fourth-grade class at Maplewood held a "Wax Museum" for their parents and administrators last week. Each student chose a famous person for a biography report. Students enjoyed researching and compiling their final report about the person they chose. Each student was also responsible for creating an "All About Me" Box. This included 5 to 7 items that were important or significant to their person of interest. The students also dressed up as their famous person and presented a speech during the wax museum. The class did a wonderful job and it was a great learning experience for all.

It’s the Principal’s List awards, where each student is brought up in front of classmates, family, and friends, a brief bio is read about his or her accomplishments and camera flashes abound. Seventy seniors were awarded certificates for their accomplishments. The honorees names are placed on a plaque that will be displayed on the walls of Whitman for years to come.

Blues Guitarist @ Stimson
During several days spent at Stimson Middle School, musician Toby Walker, a unique, accomplished finger-style guitar virtuoso, weaved heartwarming and at times humorous songs out of the stories that some of the great blues masters have shared with him.
In Mr. Walker’s “Blues in the Schools” program, he shares his history and traveling experience, allowing others to experience the sounds, sights, and emotions inspired by his unique talents. His program at Stimson brought to life in song the adversity that African Americans experienced in the deep South. “A couple of my songs are meant to shock them,” said Mr. Walker. “I want them to feel, as much as they can, the hardships felt by so many, and I can see in their faces that I get the desired effect.” Mr. Walkers website shares his experiences on the road with its viewers at: http://www.littletobywalker.com
Mr. Walker gets students, and anyone else in the room, not only to participate in his songs, but also to understand the unique importance that the history of blues and certain types of guitars play in today's pop culture and music. No doubt the program that Toby Walker shared with Stimson’s students resounded well, leaving them with a newfound respect for how music, and the blues in particular, helped shape our country.

Wildcats Thrilling Overtime Win Sets Up Today
Whitman Freshman Quinn O’Hara hadn’t been a pressure situation like this, but he knew what to do and his pass to big brother Colin, a Whitman senior, proved to be not only the right move… but the game winner as well. Colin scored his second goal of the day off that assist from Quinn; this one, with 1:57 remaining in overtime would take his team to the next level of playoffs.
Varsity Head Coach Bob Howell was trilled with the outcome and coincidence of that final overtime score. “This win over Commack started two days before when we had our best two practices ever,” said Coach Howell. “The intensity, the commitment–it was all there–everything was clicking.” But the win wasn’t with out its scare. Commack, an excellent team in transition, scored 4 goals in the fourth period to go up by one with Whitman tying it before regular time expired. “Shane Brennan had an absolutely outstanding day for us with 15 saves,” said Howell. “An offensive player knows what he wants to do, but the defensive player has to anticipate and react, it’s a very tough position and our guys were really on their game.” “Offensively, Willie Petro played his best game of the year, and it couldn’t have come at a better time,” said Howell of his senior clearing midfielder.
Beating a very good Commack team 8-7 brings today’s ultimate test. At 5PM the Wildcats will face off against the #1 seeded West Islip Lions. The Wildcat community is encouraged to come out and support their team. Go Wildcats!

Community Bonding @ Miles for Michael 5K
The place to be this past Saturday morning was Walt Whitman High School and the neighboring community along the 3rd Annual ‘Miles for Michael’ 5K Run-Walk. Mother Nature did not disappoint as she provided close to 600 registered runners and walkers with a perfect morning to be outside.
All proceeds from this annual event benefit the arts, music, and dance programs for South Huntington students. Officiated by Start to Finish Road Race Timers and Consultants, this sanctioned 5K run drew participants from the entire metro-new York area, and even as far away as Chicago and Virginia. New York road race expert commentator Mr. Terry Bisogno took to the microphone and gave runners and the South Huntington community a commentary that introduced each and every participant as they crossed the finish line. Sheila Buhse, who organized and directed this incredible event, took to the podium at the conclusion where the top three runners in over 30 categories were presented medals.
The Whitman dancers performed and at the Kids Fun Run, parents cheered on their littlest runners as they circled the Whitman track and then made a grand exit through the official finish line. There were tents with baskets for raffle and nourishment for all of the participants and their fans.“Thank you all for helping make this past weekend’s celebration a huge success,” said Ms. Buhse. “We continue to surpass the goals that we set out each year and that feat is in big part because of your involvement. This year the sun was not shining overhead but the rain held off to give us a cool morning to enjoy the challenging but fun route. Thank you all for being committed to our school community and all it has to offer.
There are many people responsible for the days success.
Our run’s committee members outdid themselves again in the days/weeks leading up to race day: Annie Michaelian, Maria Colon, Vasken Kazandjian, Sue Radin, Helene Falcone, Rory Sherman, Angela Meringolo, Lisa Brieff and Bridget Berbrick.
Our “fabulous four” Margaret Bayley, Joanne Padilla, Christine Rapp, and Kelly Twist continue to amaze us all.
A special thank you to John Burke and Kathy Hopkins who along with many other jobs prepared the route for the run. Creating and maintaining the integrity and safety for both the kid’s fun run and the streets for the 5K was a daunting job. Our day could not have happened without this amazing duo.
Morning Set Up and Break Down led by Kevin Kennedy and Carlo Giordano and their teams: Lou Savarese, Bill Rathje, Pam Lamonica, Mike Lusardi, Peter Schmid and William Ivy. Thank you all!

Walt Would be Proud
Stimson students spent a collaborative day at the Walt Whitman Birthplace recently. Teachers Joann Hili-Carbone, Kerry Chapman, Jessica Voorhees, Brian Thomas and Vasken Kazandjian led students in research and creative writing exercises that immersed our young learners in the creative world of one of our country’s best known poets.
After a tour of the historic house, build by Walt Whitman Senior, students heard a poetry lecture on creative writing and Whitman poetic features by Dr. William Walters. The students gathered in small groups and were assigned a theme often found in Whitman’s Poetry: Democracy, Cycle of life and Spirituality to name a few. Students then researched the historical time period of when their chosen theme was prevalent in Whitman’s writing and created a Whitman-like poem as well as an overview of what was happening historically at the time.
After lunch on the beautiful grounds, Whitman Birthplace Director Ms. Cynthia Shor introduced our students to the podium as they presented their newly created literary works to the audience.
The Walt Whitman birthplace is truly a national treasure right in our own backyard. We look forward to many more collaborations with our good neighbor.
