There are amazing opportunities for students at Stimson Middle School. Last Friday, Subhana Zafar, eighth-grade student, provided a detailed presentation on her internship with the Huntington Breast Cancer Action Coalition. Her presentation outlined the experience she had during her internship and provided students with information regarding the chemicals in commonly used household products. I would like to thank Ms. Melanie Robinson and Ms. Karen Miller, representatives from the HBCAC, for supporting our students and providing them with a research experience that will undoubtedly shape their future. The entire Stimson family would like to congratulate Subhana on her hard work, and know that we will continue to read about her accomplishments in the future. Job well done!

Boy's Lacrosse Makes History

They heard that they were overachievers, but the varsity boy’s lacrosse players believed in their potential. They knew they could run with the best, and this year, they found it in themselves to overcome tremendous odds. “There aren’t enough words to express how I feel about what these kids did this year,” said Varsity Head coach Robert Howell. “Considering some of our weaknesses, we went further than even I thought we might. But the one thing that a coach always asks for, and these guys delivered, is that you go out there and leave it all on the field, and they came off exhausted.” Without a doubt the Wildcats never quit and they always gave it their best, it was their hard work and commitment that took them far into the playoff bracket. “While there may have been more talented teams in the past, nobody worked harder than these kids and I really respect them for that,” said coach Howell, who celebrated his 100th win this season. “They made this, my last season as head coach, my best season ever.” Many of the Wildcat players have been playing in the South Huntington Lacrosse Program since the second grade. Some will move on to the next level, and some will recall their senior year as their greatest memory. “To knock off the number one seed in the playoffs has to be the highlight of my career coaching here at Whitman,” added coach Howell. As broadcast on MSG and News12… the Wildcats made lacrosse history going into the second round of the playoffs seeded #9 and knocked off West Islip, the #1 seed. The Wildcats went into the game with a plan that they executed brilliantly and the top-ranked lions answered too little and too late. “In the end, when Stockfeder made that goal, and Shane made that save, and Willie ran it up the field, it was an unbelievable feeling and great win for the team and the program,” said coach Howell. The Wildcats will graduate eleven seniors this year and a younger group, who experienced first-hand what hard work and dedication brings, will carry the torch as the next generation begins their quest for lacrosse supremacy in one of the top high school lacrosse areas in the nation. Congratulations to the entire team and retiring head coach Robert Howell. A special thanks to our seniors who gave everything and will always remember what they accomplished: Shane Brennan, Addison Bermudez, Spencer DeRosa, Angelo Gervasio, Scott Manning, CJ Pasterak, Willie Petro, Colin O’Hara, Chris Senecal, Matt Stockfeder, and John Haffner. Thanks as well to our outstanding assistant coaches Matt Lauria and Mike Brennan.

The annual Spring Dance Concert at Walt Whitman High School featured one of Long Island's top high school dance programs, directed and choreographed by Susan Turner Radin. “Wednesday night’s dance concert was a perfect example of the magic of performance and creative process because in spite of the challenges, differences, and obstacles we encountered throughout the year, they came together in perfect harmony and gave a fabulous show.” The evening also showcased the award winning Jazz Band and Wind Ensemble, directed by Allan Deitz and, new this year, the Voices of Walt Whitman choral group, directed by Steven Altinel. The Jazz Band got things off to a great start performing seven numbers from their 2015-2016 repertoire. Whitman’s Dance director, Ms. Susan Turner Radin then introduced several 2016 Dance Awards. The State Champion Boys Soccer team will be sending graduating seniors to a wide variety of colleges next fall. Just recently we saw two of their stars, Fabrizio Chamorro and Witman Hernandez commit to play at Old Westbury and SUNY Oneonta respectively. “Witman is the most dynamic player we’ve ever had here, and the best striker I have ever coached,” said John DiGiacomo, Whitman’s head varsity coach. “At the forward position, I think ‘bobby’ (Chamorro) will be a spark in the Old Westbury lineup. His size and athleticism will fit well there.” Congratulations to both of these young men as they carry the Wildcat pride to their respective schools next year.

On a recent Monday afternoon, Birchwood’s staff and community families joined in an important event when they decided to pony up and help women fighting cancer.'Beautiful Lengths' is a partnership between Pantene and the American Cancer Society. The role of Pantene is to help women grow long, strong, beautiful hair and provide the funds to turn this hair into free, real-hair wigs for women with cancer. “We wanted to be part of this wonderful cause sponsored by Pantene,” said Birchwood’s Assistant Principal Annie Michaelian. “Girls donated 8 inches of hair, and we invited the boys to ‘Buzz for a Cure,’ thanks to Anthony DeFranco Salon.” Birchwood received 41 hair donations (ponytails) for wig making. Also, 10 boys buzzed their hair to show support. Great job committee members of Birchwood’s SBM team who organized this successful event: Anthony Ciccarelli, Principal; Annie Michaelian, Assistant Principal; Birchwood teachers: Krista Legge, Kristen Lopez, Ian Denson, and Helma Adde; Paraprofessional Mary Palladino; Students: Gabriel Beickert, Shaelyn Sharpf; and Birchwood Parent: Dayna Cioffi. We enjoyed a special ceremony on Thursday evening June 9th, as our Project Excel program celebrated its culminating activity in the high school performing arts center. Our parents, students, and staff gathered to recognize the wonderful participants and thank our dedicated coordinators, Ian Denson - Birchwood, Maria Colon - Maplewood, Shaka Williams - Silas Wood, Richard Garcia - Stimson, and Roberto Torres - Walt Whitman High School, for all of their outstanding work this year. District Project Excel Coordinator David Perkins continues to motivate our students, parents and Social Work interns with the powerful message of hard work, commitment, and sacrifice. Mr. Perkins message was accentuated by guest speaker and Detroit Pistons NBA star Tobias Harris. Former Project Excel student Daniel Reyes traveled from Texas to share the good news of his high school graduation, inspire students to press on despite setbacks, and thank our school community for helping him achieve his goals. The dinner provided by Pollo Campero of Huntington Station, topped off a wonderful evening for our students and families. We thank everyone who supports our Project Excel program and look forward to another fantastic year to come. Photo Gallery

Doggone Regents

Walt Whitman High School enlisted the services of some well-trained proctors for the 2016 June Regents. Although short in stature, Ziggy, Chelsea, Nephrititi, and Shally took up their posts near the entrance to the North Gym and stood ready to focus test takers. Unlike most testing monitors whose job it is to maintain exam protocols, these furry workers were in charge of maintaining healthy stress levels. With flapping ears and wagging tails, this canine team hounded students for a smile and a back scratch. Finals and NYS Regents Exams create enormous stress for high school students. Thanks to a special partnership with Bideawee, Walt Whitman students were treated to these therapy dog sessions; designed to improve the testing experience by reducing test anxiety. As students arrived early for Regents exams, they were treated to some TLC by true professionals. Special thanks to Bidewee volunteers Tom Tulipan, father of Ziggy and Nephrititi; Nancy Beckmann, mother of Chelsea; and Elaine Bermas, mother of Shally. Thank you to Alicia Ryan, Bidaewee Senior Manager of Volunteer Programs and the WWHS PTA for making this program possible.
