This past November, 118 students from Stimson Middle School took the American Math Competition (AMC 8). This exam is a 25-question, 40-minute, multiple-choice examination. The examination provides an opportunity to apply the concepts taught in class to problems that are challenging as well as designed to challenge students by offering multiple problem solving experiences.
Barbara Tripi earned the top score for Stimson. Gabrielle Girard had the second highest score. Aidan Luebker and Sarah Nace tied with the 3rd highest score. Congratulations to these students and all 118 students that participated.“It is so great to work in a school district that supports their students in engaging in competitions that challenge students to use what they learned in class and promote problem solving skills,” said Dr. Matthew Murphy, Supervisor of K-12 Math, Business and Instructional Technology in South Huntington. “A special thanks to Mr. Smith and Mr. Sansotta for help with the organization, and to the dedicated teachers supporting their students in this contest, Ms. Chiarelli, Mr. Goldman, Ms. Pascussi and Mr. Tedesco.”

The Bright Lights of Maplewood
The Annual ASSET Awards Luncheon was held this past Wednesday, January 13th, and Maplewood fifth-grade teacher Ms. Lisa Hatton was recognized with their "Bright Light Award" as an outstanding educator for her use of technology in the classroom. “I've integrated technology by using digital software to print 3D; we're Coding using code.org; I have my students programming robots Dash and Dot, and, by integrating Google Drive, Docs, Classroom and Slides into our classroom, we’re able to collaborate and present far beyond the borders of Maplewood,” said Ms. Hatton. “My students love creating QR codes so they can quickly access articles, documents, and information needed to enhance their curriculum, and by using Book Creator, they have an additional platform to display what they are learning.”“Lisa Hatton is a true leader when it comes to implementing technology in her classroom,” said Maplewood Principal Dr. Vito D’Elia. “She celebrates her students on a daily basis while implementing the very latest technology, all while her students are collaborating and being creative within their 21st century classroom.”
The Suffolk ASSET organization is a group dedicated to enhancing teaching and learning in Suffolk County school districts through the use of computers and other educational technologies by encouraging the integration of technology into the K-12 curriculum and ensuring that our students are provided with the educational opportunities necessary to prepare them for the 21st century.
We congratulate Ms. Hatton on her ASSET Bright Light award.

Stimson Middle School 2016 STEAM and National History Day Curriculum Fair was nothing short of spectacular,” said Stimson Principal Edwin W. Important Message from the Superintendent of Schools
Hi All
We just received word from the Suffolk County Police department that there was a bank robbery on Jericho Turnpike,a little over ahalf-mile from Maplewood. Our school resource officer is already on site at Maplewood, and has no indication that the involved individuals are headed in that direction. However, in an abundance of caution,we are simply going to initiate a lockout procedure at Maplewood. The police officer will remain onsite and ensure that people do not come or go while police activity takes place.
Again, we have been assured that there is no direct relation to our school, and the frigid temperatures are certainly curtailing on foot movement. However, it is always best to be safe, and we have therefore initiated this lock-out procedure, which simply means people will not come or go until we have the all-clear from the police,or appropriate parameters in place for dismissal. Typical instruction and movement will continue inside the building.

Move Over Zoomba… Kerboomka is Here!
Students at Silas Wood 6th Grade Center recently got a chance to experience some hip-hop inspired, dance cardio exercise through the KerBoomkidz program. KerBoomKidz is a unique mix of dance and exercise movements that improve children's memory and physical coordination. KerBoomKidz gets its energy from the percussion and rhythm of popular music. Working in all planes of motion, the program promotes functional movements and core training by abdominal crunching and twisting with hip-hop inspired movements.
In addition to having fun through exercise, KerBoomKidz is aligned with National and New York State Physical Education Standards. The program aims to stimulate and strengthen students' minds by creating a focused learning environment while promoting a healthy lifestyle through creative dance. Founder and creator Kershel Anthony and master instructor Andrea Racanelli taught our sixth-graders multiple dance moves and created a dynamic dance routine. Once the students learned the routine they participated in multiple "dance crew battles" to see which crew had the best moves.

Cold Hands Find Warm Hearts at Countrywood
The Countrywood Mitten Drive was inspired by the children’s book, The Mitten Tree, by Candace Christiansen. The idea came to Ms. Lamorte as she read this wonderful, heartwarming story to her kindergarteners. Countrywood students are helping families in their community by bringing in new mittens and gloves. They will be donated to families in need through the Helping Hands Rescue Mission and the Family Service League. Thank you to Ms. Davis, CW’s art teacher, for creating the beautiful mitten tree and to the many “helping hands” here at Countrywood who are reaching out to help others!

A Message from the Superintendent
Hi All:
I wanted to take a moment and communicate a message from Dr. Wright that while Stimson athletic tryouts and high school sports are proceeding today, no child will be penalized for an inability to attend. We understand the weather-related circumstance and will be completely understanding of that reality. Furthermore, school absences and lateness will not be held against students in any way, as we understand that transportation was extremely difficult and irregular at best.
As for today’s delayed opening, we recognize and appreciate the problems, inconveniences, car, and bus issues associated with this morning’s opening. We try to do the best we can with the information we have at our disposal through communication with Huntington School Superintendents, maintenance personnel, Town Highway Department, and municipal officials. We then collate the information and make a best prediction decision. Interestingly, all 18 of the Western Suffolk Superintendents were working off the same information (thus the reason that every school in the cluster opened today).
That being said, there are no perfect decisions, and the final call rests with me. Therefore, I made the decision for a two-hour delayed opening based on the data, predictions and observations I had available at the time. I completely understand the frustrations and realize that today was very uncomfortable and inconvenient for people. While I don’t have the benefit of hindsight on the variables that led to the decision, I can make sure to address things such as poor communication about bus stops, delays, etc., that we are hearing. I will also continue to communicate any specific road delays that we are seeing in our travels, or receiving from the public, directly to the Highway Department.
Again, I understand and appreciate the concerns and remain focused on getting everyone home safely and securely today.
Thanks and be well,
Dave Bennardo

Whitman's Senior Follies Packs the PAC
On Friday evening, January 15thit was standing room only as Whitman's seniors held their annual "Follies" to the delight of everyone both on the stage and in the audience. "Follies" is a seriously fun time where the seniors perform skits and roast their favorite teachers, administrators and celebrate all that high school life can be. Skits included: Powderpuff Practice, Game Day for Dreher, Faculty Feud, Girls Song, Dance Lessons, Whitman News, and Graduation Song to name just a few.
Congratulations to the senior class for putting on one of the best Senior Follies shows in the last 10 years. The entire school community seemed to be present as a sold out crowd of over 600 had a roaring great time. DECA sold refreshments, robotics launched shirts into the audience, seniors performed, administrators danced, parents and students watch with enthusiasm, and of course the talented students of video yearbook filmed.
Thank you to Ms. Zamow and all the students responsible for all their hard work and efforts. The seniors’ creativity and energy went unmatched and they all deserve a big Congrats!
Who will forget Mr. Murphy appearing numerous times dragging his bench to shine the light in all the new benches that have recently been placed in the front of the school, and of course the principal debate that featured Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders and Donald Trump, and the traditional Spartan cheerleader and coffee tawk skits had everyone hysterical. There were many cameos, and praise was also given to the New York State Champion Boys Varsity Soccer Team!
Special thanks to the Senior Class Officers for coordinating this fantastic event, Zachary Lanz for sound effects, Alex Dollin for lighting and special effects, Mr. Plompen and the Lamplighter team, SDE for sound equipment, the Whitman custodians, the South Huntington Library, and of course Mr. Murphy and the Walt Whitman Administrative team for being such good sports and participating in the show.

Stimson Sweeps Patriots Pen Competition
Congratulations to Stimson students Sydney Khan, Ethan Halle, and Mae Morelli for their winning entries in the VFW Patriots Pen Essay contest. Sydney will be presented with a first place award, Ethan the second place award, and Mae with the third place award through Nathan Hale VFW Post #1469 on Tuesday, February 2nd. Sydney’s winning essay “What Patriotism Means to Me” spoke about how Freedom is the most important idea of our thinking world and how as a society, and world, we cannot move forward with out it. Her essay will now been entered in the regional competition and could go all the way to the national contest.
Ethan’s essay spoke about how we are a land of immigrants with unlimited opportunity. “My great grandparents came here from Poland and Russia,” said Ethan in his essay. “[They] saw through education and hard work that their children could obtain a better life.” Mae Morelli spoke about our country and the sacrifices made on our behalf. “To me freedom is a right. It’s something I value and don’t take for granted,” said Mae. “Many lives have been sacrificed to protect our freedoms and liberties and what they did to make our country a better place, America the free.”
Congratulation Stimson students and to Stimson Social Studies teacher Karen Schmitt who will also received a certificate for submitting the winning essay.
