Sixth Annual Tea & Ties Mentoring Evening
On Friday, January 12th, our Project Excel team hosted their annual “Tea and Ties” program at Silas Wood Sixth-Grade Center. This very special tradition, initiated by Deputy Superintendent Dr. Jacci Harris and Mr. David Perkins, treats our students to an evening of mentoring from dedicated graduates and adults from the local communities.
Through the partnership with the Malik Fraternity Inc., our young men listened to inspirational stories of character, participated in wise-decision making exercises, and worked on their team building skills. The activities for the gentlemen also included a lesson in professional dress, which involved an important tutorial on the appropriate method for tying a tie, which was greatly appreciated by our young men.
The young ladies enjoyed an equally impressive program. Keynote speaker Cynthia Quinlan and daughter Alexandra Leftridge, from LUNA Reflections, Inc. presented an informative workshop designed to have girls develop positive self-images. Our young ladies participated in discussions, cooperative learning activities and the creation of a vision board.
We would like to commend our Project Excel Coordinators on helping to ensure the evening was such a success: coordinators Ian Denson (BW), Maria Colon (MW), Shaka Williams (SW), Jen DeNoble (SMS) and Roberto Torres (WW). And of course, Bidania Criscuolo for her excellent work with Project Excel. We want to especially thank our social work interns for all their hard work as well: Nicholas Aprigliano, Wesly Bazemore, Kristie Bohn, Lisbel Collado, Marc Etts, Maria Jaramillo, Michael Rivera, Jonathan Rosen, Marisa Seslowsky, Ashley N. Smith, Bridget Vaher, Daniela Venegas, Ana Alicia Walsh.
A special thanks to our partners from LUNA Reflections, Inc., Malik Fraternity, and Pollo Campero for making the evening extra special.

Maplewood Geography Bee Has a Winner
Maplewood Intermediate School just held its annual Geography Bee, which is sponsored by the National Geographic Society and Maplewood’s Student Council. Nineteen fourth- and fifth-grade students competed in this year’s Bee.
Students first competed at the classroom level and the winners then moved on to the school-wide Geography Bee. Congratulations to Maplewood’s school champion, Angelee Cordova Palma, a fifth grader in Ms. Gomez’s class. The school-wide runner-up was Sophia Reichhold, a fifth-grader in Ms. McQueen and Mr. Fauci’s class.
Angelee just took her 42-question written test, comprised of both multiple choice and short response questions, in order to qualify to compete at the state level. Should she score high enough and move on to the state level, she may then possibly advance to the national level.
The final National Geographic Geography Bee takes place in Washington, DC in May 2018, with the first place winner receiving a $50,000 college scholarship, a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society, including a subscription to National Geographic magazine, and a trip to the Galapagos Islands, courtesy of Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic.

Danielle Henneborn a Finalist in State Poster Competition
We are excited to hear that Danielle Henneborn was just selected as a finalist for the New York State “Kids Safe Online” Poster Contest! This statewide competition focused on Internet Safety and will be used to educate students and adults about the importance of not posting personal information on the Internet. In addition, Danielle’s work will be submitted to the National K-12 competition. “I chose the angler fish as my visual because of what it does – lure in other fish as prey,” said our super creative student about the dangers lurking on the Internet.
This is not the first time we heard about Danielle’s creative talent. Last year she won the Suffolk County “The Truth About Energy Drinks” PSA Contest with her Animation and Video entry. “Danielle has tremendous creativity and drive,” said Whitman’s Advanced Computer Graphics teacher Ms. Erica Raji. “Her focused determination comes from within and she’s able to tap into that and really bring her creativity out.”
Danielle sees herself as a visual communications specialist and as a junior will soon start her search for that perfect college fit, and no matter where she ends up, we’re sure her creative talent will speak for itself and open plenty of doors.

Current News Story About a Former Teacher
The district has received requests for comments about an incident that was reported last May in which a now-former teacher was arrested for an inappropriate relationship with a female student. The district supports the police department’s successful efforts but has not been involved in their investigation. We have received, and immediately acted upon, Mr. Dreher’s resignation and have no additional details other than those being reported to the media. Mr. Dreher has not been in the classroom or on campus since the time of the initial accusations and is, since the time of his resignation, no longer employed by the district.
