Spotlight on our Birchwood Teacher of the Year

From Interim Personnel Administrator Frank Fallon: Those who know Helma Adde, Birchwood Intermediate School’s nominee for Teacher of the Year, respect her dedication as a fourth grade teacher. Her reputation as a hard-working and caring teacher has garnered the respect of students, parents and colleagues. But there is another side to Ms. Adde, elementary teacher. She is an emerging documentary filmmaker. Her film, “Our Last Stand, One Woman’s Journey to Reveal the Plight of Christians in Iraq and Syria” has received worldwide acclamation as an important statement on the crisis in the Middle East. During the summer months, Helma and her film crew traveled to Iraq and to Syria to meet with families in refugee camps fleeing ISIS. The conditions were difficult for her, as well as the refugees, as scarcity of basic needs existed in these areas. Still she persevered to tell their story. As a result of her sacrifices in making this film, which brought attention to the plight of the refugees, she was named Humanitarian of the Year by the Assyrian Chamber of Commerce. To many throughout the world, Helma Adde is a journalist and filmmaker making important statements on conditions in the Middle East. To those in our schools, she is a wonderful role model, particularly to young girls, as she tells her story and follows her dreams. Congratulations, Helma!

Silas Wood students in Ms. Carol Kelly’s science class welcomed News12 Meteorologist Bill Korbel to their class recently. Who better to help impress what the class has been learning than this veteran Meteorologist of more that 25 years. Turns out Mr. Korbel is a natural teacher and the students came away with an even greater understanding of their classroom curriculum in the areas of life science, physical science and earth science. Thank you Bill Korbel and the good folks at News12.

Kindergarten Kids Create Adventures For Code-A-Pillar

Introducing coding to kindergarten students helps them reflect on their own learning as they develop 21st-century skills such as problem solving, collaboration, and creativity. Coding has emerged as one of the most popular learning trends in recent years, and when it comes to programming, young students are proving to be just as capable as older students. Engaging students in computer-based learning at an early age helps students retain their interest, as those subjects become progressively more challenging throughout their education. Teaching coding in kindergarten helps young students develop the creativity, planning, and problem solving skills that will position them for success as they move through their school years. Being computer literate, equips students to learn how to code so they will be able to participate in this high-tech economy in the future. Mrs. Bertolino and Mrs. D'Elia, provided Countrywood students with the learning experience “Kindergarten Kids Create Adventures For Code-A-Pillar” where kindergarten students were introduced to the exciting world of computer programming through hands on play with Code-A-Pillar. It incorporates computer science as an interdisciplinary approach to learning writing and mathematics providing all students with a multi-sensory learning experience. Students use a combination of drawing, dictating, and writing to narrate their adventure for Code-A-Pillar telling the events on how he/she traveled from one setting to the next. It engages the students to program an adventure for Code-A-Pillar around a path, thereby strengthening mathematical skills such as planning, sequencing, collaboration, and problem solving.“Kindergarten Kids Create Adventures For Code-A-Pillar” incorporates technology to enhance student learning because children are intrigued and fascinated by new and engaging devices in the classroom. This learning experience is inspiring little learners to be big thinkers. They’re curious about absolutely everything and they learn the most by playing, experimenting, and figuring out how things work. Code-A-Pillar sparks their natural curiosity, and the students play with it in all kinds of new ways. When kids are busy playing, they’re building more than just learning, but most importantly, the foundation to grow into bigger thinkers!

Oakwood Art Teacher Noreen Erickson shared a wonderful story and photos of her students visiting the Heckscher Museum of Art. The second grade took a field trip to the Heckscher Museum of Art in the month of March. It was a wonderful opportunity for the students to visit a museum and explore all different forms of art. The children were excited to view the Long Island Best display, which showcased local talented high school artists. The students were so impressed to see what magnificent work they may create one day when they are in High School. They also viewed paintings from the birth of our country throughout the revolutionary war. The program at the Heckscher helps build skills in the students such as communication, creativity, collaboration and critical thinking. At the museum the children discussed different pieces of artwork with the docents and learned about important art vocabulary words. They even were able to create a piece of artwork during their visit. The students had a great time at the Heckscher Museum of Art!

On Friday, March 24th, our Project Excel team hosted their annual “Tea and Ties” program at Silas Wood Sixth-Grade Center. This very special tradition, initiated by Deputy Superintendent Jacci Harris and Mr. David Perkins, treats our students to an evening of mentoring from dedicated graduates and adults from the local communities. Through the partnership with the Malik Fraternity Inc., our young men listened to inspirational stories of character, participated in wise-decision making exercises, and worked on their team building skills. The activities for the gentlemen also included a lesson in professional dress, which involved an important tutorial on the appropriate method for tying a tie, which was greatly appreciated by our young men. The young ladies enjoyed an equally impressive program. Keynote speaker Alexandra Leftridge, from LUNA Reflections, Inc. presented an informative workshop designed to have girls develop positive self-images. Our young ladies participated in discussions, cooperative learning activities and the creation of a vision board.“The thoughtful planning and flawless execution made the evening a memorable learning experience for each student lucky enough to be a part of Project Excel,” said Superintendent Bennardo in his weekly newsletter. “Helping our young ladies understand the common courtesies of etiquette, while teaching our young male students how to tie a necktie, was important to their overall social development. The team building, sense of pride, and genuine enthusiasm was on grand display the entire evening.” We would like to commend our Project Excel Coordinators on helping to ensure the evening was such a success: coordinators Ian Denson, Jennifer DeNoble, Maria Colon, Shaka Williams, and Roberto Torres. And of course, Solange Rich for her excellent work with Project Excel. We want to especially thank our social work interns for all their hard work as well: Amanda Bono, Matthew Barthwell, Danielle Busch, Jessica Caporaso, Nicholas Crovello, Robert Danielson, Alexandra D'Orio, Eric Falkman, Ximena Gutierrez, Alicia Centamore Freda, and Martine Macdonald. A special thanks to our partners from LUNA Reflections, Inc., Malik Fraternity, Ace Hardware, Brio, and Pollo Campero for making the evening extra special. Photo Gallery
