On November 14th South Huntington’s Bilingual Advisory Council presented to our Spanish Speaking families how to navigate through the School Website, the Calendar and Parent Portal. Our Stimson World Language teacher Marissa McCord talked about our website and the importance to understand all of the available resources that can found in their native language. Our Walt Whitman High School social worker Mr. Graciani highlighted our district calendar events, days off and school meetings. Calendars were distributed to all parents. During the BAC presentation, our TECH specialists Darryl Mancuso and Jackie Cantley assisted parents in obtaining their new Parent Portal sign on. After the presentation, parents were escorted to the computer lab where they learned step-by-step how to change their passwords and sign in for the first time. Members of the committee, Ericka Perez Flowers our Bilingual (English/Spanish) Speech-Language Pathologist from Oakwood, Mr. Garcia our social worker from Stimson, Jacqueline Maggio, a teacher from Maplewood and Jennifer Provide our social worker from Birchwood were ready to assist parents during the registration process.“Not only is a great pleasure to see members of the committee supporting and empowering parents, but it is extremely gratifying seeing 33 families looking at their children's records on our Parent Portal for the first time,” said Whitman social worker Mr. Roberto Torres. “The Bilingual Advisory Council's mission is to increase parent engagement and to meet the needs of our multi-bilingual community, we have a lot of work to do going forward.”

What It’s All About

Countrywood’s self-contained classes were busy in November preparing for a Thanksgiving feast. Students in Mr. Cardella’s and Ms. Grey’s classes learned about money, budgeting, purchasing and receiving change. They created a Thanksgiving menu and wrote a list of foods they would need to buy. With their grocery lists and cash in hand, the students visited Best Market grocery store in South Huntington just before Thanksgiving. They went aisle to aisle picking out their items, all while working to keep within their budget. At the checkout counter, they paid the cashier and helped bag their groceries. Once back in the classrooms, they set about creating the perfect Thanksgiving feast. They filled large baskets with just the right ingredients and wrote Happy Thanksgiving cards for the families that would receive their baskets. Turns out, our students had also learned a lot about community and what it means to help those less fortunate in our own. So these feasts were off to one of our local food pantries just in time Thanksgiving. For our students, giving back was what Thanksgiving was all about.

October Athletes of the Month

Field Hockey Goalie Kristy Campana is our October Athlete of the Month. The team saw solid improvement in a tough Division 1, ending with a 5-9 record. “It’s all about how you play and not necessarily the score,” said our college-bound senior. “Coach Scharpf is always telling us to focus on how you play and how to get better, steadily improving throughout the season.” With close to 200 saves this past year Kristy is looking to play at the college level. “I have a few schools in mind where I can play as well as pursue my major [Meteorology]. Beyond college, coaching is not out of the question. “I started eight years ago in league play and just love the sport.” Kristy also plays Lacrosse in the spring but field hockey is clearly her passion. Kristy is a member of Robotics, Girl’s Leadership, and is the senior class treasurer. The Annual Suffolk County Awards Dinner is December 5th and we’re hoping for Kristy to come away with an award. Our Male Athlete for the Month of October is Cross County Runner Aiden Smyth. Through mud and snow, Aiden ran the State Championships in the shadow of Lake Ontario and was one of Suffolk County’s top 5 runners, missing All-State by a mere 17 seconds. “The State Qualifier at Sunken Meadow was a humid 70-degree day and a week later at the State Meet it was 20 degrees with snow on the ground and mud everywhere, so our Suffolk runners had a tough go of it,” ceded Aiden.“Last year was a tough year for me, so my goal this year was to make ‘States’ and when I broke out in the Division with a solid time of 16:51, that earned me All-County and then All-County Academic,” said Aiden. “The State qualifier was the real ‘pressure race’ because Suffolk has such depth at Cross Country and they only take 5 individuals.” Aiden will run again in the winter and spring track seasons’ competition in both the 1600m and 2-mile events. A senior who is enjoying his final year of high school, he is a member of the National Honor Society, National English Honor Society, and the World Languages Honor Society. For college, Aiden credits his teachers for cultivating his love of the sciences and will major in Biomedical Engineering at Binghamton, Stony Brook or Buffalo. Congratulations to both of these talented seniors!

Seniors Rule in Annual Sports Event

On Monday, November 20, the Walt Whitman senior class took on the faculty in an exciting and entertaining series of 6 sporting events in the South Gymnasium. The Senior Faculty Sports Night is always an anticipated event as our faculty like to remind the seniors that they once took to the sports courts, albeit for some, many moons ago. From Basketball to Volleyball to Musical Chairs, the events were somewhat competitive, but the seniors prevailed in just about every event! A relay-style event titled ‘Mission Impossible’ proved to be just that, as the obstacle course frustrated most of our post-graduates. Nerf Dodge Ball really brought out the seniors, all clamoring for a shot at their favorite teacher or administrator. It was a welcome relief for the 2 games to be over and the seniors declare victory. The games were fierce - but fun was had by all. Congratulations to the Walt Whitman Senior Class of 2018 on their victory. Thank you to Ms. Zamow for organizing this great event, and thank you, faculty and seniors, for providing boundless entertainment.

While the South Huntington Schools excel in a variety of athletic, artistic, and cultural endeavors, the foundation of our district is grounded in an unwavering commitment to scholastic achievement. Quality teaching and enlightened learning serve as the cornerstones of our daily mission, and we embrace the opportunity to share programs and strategies with the members of our learning family. To this end, we have initiated a series of presentations, which highlight a different academic department at Board of Education meetings throughout the year. We have been privileged thus far to hear the good news from our English and Social Studies teams, and you can find copies of those presentations on the district’s website. At our most recent Board of Education meeting, our Math Department shared their strategies, programs, and people that will comprise their continued climb to excellence. A special thank you to our Math Lab teachers and regularMath teachers from all grade levels who attended the presentation and showed their support. The presentation is attached as a PDF file below.

The early college signing period for high school seniors has begun and two athletes announced their decisions at an official ceremony today. Congratulations to Noelle Bryggman and Shannon Polk who will be playing at the next level.“A lot of players enjoy the game, but Noelle really loves it,” said varsity softball coach Ralph Miranda. “One of the things that’s so great about Noelle is her versatility, she has been our Shortstop for the past two years but I could ask her to play just about any position and she would be happy to do it, and more importantly, do a great job at it. She’s a big part of our team and we will miss her next year.” Varsity Woman’s Lacrosse Coach Lisa Christiansen has nothing but praise for her senior Attack player. “Shannon is one of the purest shooters I’ve ever met,” said Christiansen. “She has worked so hard and grown so much from her freshman year and to be able to go to her dream school, I couldn’t be more proud of her. Shannon will be an integral part of the Wildcat offense this year.” Congratulations to both of these tremendous athletes on their commitment for next year and good luck this coming spring sports season.

This is an incredible honor, and we are so proud of Maelyn for being selected. Congratulations Ladies and Coach Greco on a greatseason!

On Monday and Tuesday of last week Birchwood students visited the Google Expeditions AR Pioneer Program. This program provided students with a special opportunity. Expeditions AR use Google's Augmented Reality technology to map the physical classroom and then teachers are able to place 3D objects around the classroom. Students walked all around the objects, got in close to spot details, and stepped back to see the full picture. Birchwood would like to thank our wonderful new Librarian, Cathy Schlaich, for bringing this to our school. We would also like to thank Christine Sepe and Jennifer DelGiorno, our terrific tech mentors, for leading the students through this awesome experience.

Give Me 5... Just in Time!

The flu season may be early this year, and students at Silas Wood got a healthy reminder recently on the importance of cleanliness. Farmingdale State College Nursing students, Danielle Buoucore and Elizabeth Jarossy, with their professor, Dr. Maria Nikolaidou, visited the English students in Ms. Cirillo's class to share a lesson on hygiene thanks to Silas's nurse, Sally Cappy who is involved in their intern program. The lesson included "Give Me 5", a beautiful tri-fold display that showed the necessary steps in hand washing. Next, the Silas students were able to rub their hands with a special powder after they "washed" their hands. The lights in the classroom were turned off and Ms Buoucore and Ms. Jarossy used a black light device that showed the students the spots they had missed which glowed in the dark. This activity was amazing because the English students were able to see that their method of hand washing needed to be improved upon! Just as they've learned so far at Silas, we can always get better at what we do. Thank you to Ms. Buoucore, Ms. Jarossy, and Dr. Nikolaidou for such a hands-on experience! Literally!

With 20 goals and an assist, the news for this outstanding senior gets even better, varsity coaches John DiGiacomo and Brian Karcz are proud to announce that Fernando has been named to the All-State team. Fernando has been honored for his dedication and hard work by being named to Newsday's All-Long Island Boys Soccer second team. Way to Go Fernando!

Maplewood’s fifth-grade students engaged with the Google Expeditions Pioneer Program where they were immersed in virtual journeys of ‘Forces of Nature’ and ‘The Solar System.’ The program used Google Tango technology to effectively scan and map a physical room and accurately project 3D models throughout. Students were able to have a live, direct view of a hurricane’s eye, go inside a tornado, and experience how the earth’s plates shift during an earthquake. This learning experience provided our students with up-close encounters of how anything can be brought to life with Augmented and Virtual Reality.
