The Walt Whitman Varsity Football team lost their season opener in a tight defensive battle against Northport 19-0. The score at halftime was 6-0, as the defensive unit led by Joe Ward with 10 tackles, Angelo Gervasio, Terron Robinson and Anthony Dennison gave the team opportunities to win. “We’re in these games well into the 3rd quarter but offensively we’re just not finishing,” said Varsity Head Coach Robin Rosa. The offense led by Isaiah Wilkerson and Tyrese Betts had opportunities, but couldn't capitalize. The Wildcats dropped their most recent contest against Sachem East 21-6 in a game that was much tighter than the score suggests. “On paper we should be able to compete against these teams,” said Rosa. “We need to execute, we need to put it in when were in the red zone, we need to start scoring.” Come support the team this Saturday at Bayshore, game time is 1pm. The Wildcats next home game is Homecoming Weekend, Saturday October 10th at 2PM as they go up against Sachem North.

Walt Whitman has two distinguished students who have been named as commended students to the National Merit Scholarship Program. Congratulations to Misha Patel and JoonHo Ko. Misha is presently in the middle of her final year playing tennis for the Wildcats and will be back on the badminton court in the spring. She is the Vice President of Competition for DECA and a member of the Whitman Mathletes team. “DECA is a great way for students to be involved and learn about business without having to take business classes,” said Misha. “DECA really helps with presentation skills and to be more outgoing.” Misha is fine-tuning her search for colleges to best prepare her for becoming a physician. She also predicts that the senior girls will win the Powder Puff football game on Thursday night, October 8th Go seniors! For Joonho Ko, a top player on the men’s tennis team, and a leader of the Wildcat Mathletes team, his fall has been spent concentrating on applying to colleges and narrowing the field. MIT is still his top pick. Joon is also a member of the Whitman Jazz Band and plays the Euphonium in the Concert Band. His National Merit Commendation was a pleasant surprise. Joon was recently featured for his nomination to the All-National Honors Concert Band. Congratulations Misha Patel and JoonHo Ko.

This past Saturday, the family of Harry P. Kent held a tree dedication ceremony at Silas Wood in honor of the retired former principal. With the support of the District, a beautiful tree was planted on the front lawn of Silas Wood. Harry Kent passed away in the spring and his son John and daughter Rose helped lead a short and touching ceremony that included remarks from Dr. David Bennardo, Dr. Emily Rogers, and two of Mr. Kent’s grandchildren. Theresa Kent spoke lovingly about her grandfather who was born in New York City in 1929. Edward Kent read a poem that held significant meaning to his grandfather. Harry Kent’s wife Theresa, surrounded by family completed the planting and the audience concluded the ceremony singing ‘When Irish Eyes are Smiling,” led by Tom Kelsh.

Walt Whitman Principal John Murphy presented the National Academy of Future Physicians and Medical Students Award of Excellence this morning to James Reilly. Joining the principal was Assistant Principal Jon Varlamos and Director of Guidance Ms. Leah Lugovina.“This medical conference presented an incredible opportunity to listen and meet some of the top doctors and medical scientists in the nation,” said James. “It helps students get a clearer picture of which field of medicine may interest them most.” Spending a week at the University of Massachusetts in Lowell this past summer, James is still leaning towards the Neurosurgical field.“I’m enjoying the diversity and opportunities here at Whitman,” said the Whitman junior, who plays the Tuba in the Marching Band, the Trombone in the Jazz Band, and is a member of the Whitman’s literary magazine Xanadu. “I really enjoy reading and writing, almost as much as everything else,” said James about his yen for the literary world. Congratulations James Reilly for embracing all that Whitman has to offer and working hard to move his goals closer to reality.

Publication Gets Major Overhaul

Paw Print, the Walt Whitman student publication, went through a major overhaul recently and has positioned itself to be a new creative platform in which students share their experiences in different mediums.“Over the past couple of years we wanted to modernize the paper- make it more assessable to the student body,” said Paw Print Editor in Chief Taylor Fox. “I’m excited about all the opportunities this gives us going forward.” Last year, Paw Print students worked with Online developer Student Newspapers Online (SNO) to create an all-inclusive website that will allow for creative submissions in both written and visual mediums. Paw Print would like to thank Chase Dowdle and Ellen Tricomi who were seniors last year and instrumental in the inception of this new online magazine.“We’re really trying to let students know that you don’t have to be a journalism student or an English major to become part of Paw Print,” said Kellie Maguire, Paw Print co-advisor.“If you're interested in sports and want to write about your favorite time at City Field or Yankee Stadium, or what it will be like to travel to Brooklyn to watch the Islanders, we encourage you to submit your stories. If you’re a visual artist we have a platform for you to share your drawings, paintings, photographs or short videos,” said Brittany Baran, a Whitman English teacher and co-advisor to Paw Print.“Many younger people have gravitated away from traditional print and into the digital world,” said Ms. Fox. “Our new online publication is geared to news and current events, but also focuses on the students and gives them a creative platform to share their experiences.” The Paw Print team used the popular website ‘Go Fund Me’ to raise the needed funds to accomplish their goals. The editorial staff would like to thank the following sponsors: the Ramirez family, the Fox family, the Ferreri family, the Tricomi family, R&W Provisions, and Barton & Klieger, P.C. “Our students and advisors continue to do great things as they combine literature and technology to produce an online publication that celebrates the accomplishments of our schools,” said Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and Curriculum Dr. Jared Bloom. “I encourage you to log onto the Paw Print and enjoy the fine work. http://wwhspawprint.com/
