Whitman Student’s to Begin Summer Research
A good number of Whitman student’s will begin summer research projects at Mount Sinai, Brookhaven National Lab, Farmingdale University and Stony Brook University this summer.
Rising 10th grader Alina Naseer has been accepted to Brookhaven National Laboratory's highly competitive STEM Summer Institute. For 4 weeks this summer, Alina will work with BNL researchers to explore topics in physics, biology, energy, engineering, scientific computing and environmental science, culminating in a poster presentation at Brookhaven at the end of the summer.
Rising 10th grader Subhana Zafar has been selected for an internship at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai this summer, working with researchers to investigate environmental factors that impact cancer rates. The internship has a unique public outreach component, and Subhana's experience over the last two years as an intern in the offices of the Huntington Breast Care Action Coalition (HBCAC) has uniquely prepared her for this. Subhana currently participates in Fred Feraco's research class.

May Athletes of the Month
Sarah Glaser, and her teammates on the softball team, got off to a rough start at 1-4 but even before the weather turned, Sarah and her Lady Wildcats turned their season around, winning the next 14 out of 15 games and launching them into a memorable playoff run. “We worked really hard and took third place in Suffolk County,” said our Molloy bound softball star. Sarah also played basketball at Whitman, she is a member of the Girls Leaders Organization, the National Honor Society, volunteered for the Booster Club, and is involved in numerous community service opportunities. She ended her high school softball career as All-County.
Camilee Getchell had a solid lacrosse season. “While we struggled in many of our games, we saw improvement in the program overall,” said Camilee, acknowledging the rebuilding goal. “We had one of our best year in a long time, and I’m excited for the programs future with the players we have.” Camilee also played soccer and basketball at Whitman. She is a member of the Girls Leaders Organization, and the National Honor Society. Camilee was awarded All-Division for the 2017 season and will be attending the University of Alabama in the fall.
It surprised Whitman junior Aiden Smyth to have such a strong spring track season. He took the winter off with an injury, and came back even stronger winning most of his races that included the 1600m and 3200m and placed 4th in the division for both events. He continued his success in the county meet placing in the top tier and finished in the top ten for the state qualifier. Aiden was awarded All-County for the 1600m. Aiden runs cross-country in the fall and winter track. He is a member of the National Honor Society, the World Language Honor Society and keeps a busy volunteer schedule. We should see plenty more of him as he enters his senior year in the fall.

Spring Sing Along @ Oakwood
As they prepare for their graduation to 3rd grade at Birchwood, Oakwood’s 2nd grade singers, under the direction of Ms. Luella Pinelli, entertained their schoolmates and parents at their annual spring sing-along recently. The students sang a collection of songs that featured their ukuleles. A special treat was the addition of renowned singer/songwriter Ms. Marla Lewis who wrote the song "We All Laugh in the Same Language." Ms. Lewis visited Oakwood’s music classes and made a video of the children singing the song. “I was so thrilled and delighted to see my song come to life with your wonderful singers,” said Ms. Lewis. “The children performed beautifully, and you [Ms. Pinelli] led the ensemble like a real pro."
Congratulations to the following classes and good luck next year at Birchwood. Mrs. McLaughlin and Mrs. Wright's, Mrs. Farkas, Mrs. Herrera, Ms. Villanueva and Ms. Winkoff's, and Mrs. Pica classes.

Miller is a Greentree Graduate
This past year Silas Wood teacher Natalie Miller had the most incredible experience being part of the educational classes given through the Greentree Foundation. This yearlong program taught teachers how to take a step out of the classroom and integrate ecological scientific principles through teaching outdoors. Teachers learned through hands-on training and benefited from the expertise of some of Long Island's best professors and ecologists. The program was a week long, starting last July and then periodically meeting throughout the school year. The educators that participated were very impressed by the beauty of the grounds, the thoughtful lessons that integrated Next Generation Science Standards, the variety of educational materials that were provided for each educator, and even the exquisite meals created daily by an in-house chef. Natalie's hope is to educate teachers about the program. Graduation was held June 15th, and Natalie feels very blessed to be afforded such a life-changing experience.

Walt Whitman High School Class of 2017 Graduation
You couldn’t have asked for a better morning in which 465 Whitman seniors began the next step in their lives. Calling for a ninety-minute delay on a rainy Saturday morning gave everyone, including Mother Nature, the time they needed to enjoy a perfect crystal blue sky by 11:30 a.m. Students, guests, and family members heard retiring Board of Education President Jim Kaden’s last commencement speech, District Superintendent Dr. David Bennardo, and Whitman Principal John Murphy also gave their commencement message on this eighty-seventh Walt Whitman Graduation. The two-hour ceremony also featured Whitman’s Senior Class President Dylan Diamond; Salutatorian, Karthi’ Mayilvahanan; and this year’s Valedictorian, Shelbi Wuss; who, along with their 2017 senior classmates, began a new and promising chapter in their young lives. The Walt Whitman Symphony Orchestra, led by Mr. Matthew Hoffman ushered the seniors in and out of the ceremony that also featured the Whitman choir led by Mr. Steven Altinel.

Ladybugs in the Garden
Spring got off to a great start in Mrs. Lamorte’s Countrywood Kindergarten class. Students planted a kinder”garden” of their own. Children planted a variety of healthy herbs and vegetables in the Countrywood courtyard, such as tomatoes, lettuce, beans, peppers, zucchini, eggplant, basil, dill, thyme and parsley. The students are getting an educational and enjoyable experience as they tend to their garden and watch the crops grow!
Students are also learning about ladybugs life cycle and how they can benefit the vegetable garden. The children released a few hundred ladybugs and watched with interest as the insects explored the garden. They learned that ladybugs can help the garden stay healthy, as they help rid the garden of harmful aphids that can damage plants and vegetables.
Gardening is a great way for students to learn new skills while having fun outdoors and provides plentiful opportunities for hands-on learning. By tending to their own plants, students learn a sense of responsibility and a healthy respect for nature. They experience a sense of discovery as they learn about the science of plants, insects, weather and the environment.
Teamwork skills are also developed as children work cooperatively to create and maintain their garden. As students care for their plants, their love of learning will grow along with the vegetables in their garden.

Fourth of July Message from Superintendent Bennardo
I want to take a moment to wish the members of our school community a very happy, healthy Fourth of July celebration. Independence Day is a unique holiday because it accentuates our national identity and reflects the very essence of our American values and traditions. Regardless of one's background or place of origin, we are all bound by the values of democracy, freedom, and opportunity that were pledged with sacred honor in 1776. While there is no question that the complete realization of the words embodied in the Declaration of Independence is a daily work in progress, the United States of America still remains the greatest hope for humanity on the face of the earth. Although our open debate and passionate disagreements might appear to be signals of weakness, they are, in fact, the clearest signs that the revolutionary concept considered by the Continental Congress is alive and well at the core of our democracy. Those who understand our country realize that the right to passionately express opinions and vociferously exchange diverse ideas is, in fact, the blessing that makes us fundamentally American. The American Revolution provided us the right to constant, robust evolution and in doing so, ensured the steady progress and growth of our people and values throughout the generations.
As we settle into our picnics and barbecues this week, let's take a moment to reflect upon the gifts that American freedom and democracy bring to our families. Let's pause for just a second and think about all we have become, and all we will be, because of the courage exhibited in 1776 by courageous patriots at Independence Hall. The days ahead promise great things for our country, and South Huntington will continue to lead the way by demonstrating that common goals, civil discourse, and positive energy can produce unprecedented results.
Have a wonderful Fourth of July celebration and please be well.

Gold in Salt Lake City
Whitman incoming senior Mark Dammer brought home gold from the Summer Fencing Nationals in Salt Lake City, on July 6th. Mark is a Saber fencer and has been fencing for five years. When he’s not on the Wildcat Strip he can be found at H3 fencing out of Hills East. The Summer Nationals is a qualifying event bringing in top fencers from around the nation. “I really didn’t think I was going to get that far,” admitted our Gold Medal winner. “The excitement of knowing that I could do this started to build after I beat the kid that got me into the table of eight. That’s when I realized that I could get into the finals and perhaps win.” And win he did, all the way to first place.“Fencing takes time,” admitted Mark. “If you’re going to take fencing seriously, start early and join a club to fence year-round.” Mark is also a midfielder for the Wildcat lacrosse team and is looking forward to his senior year. He is making the college visit circuit hoping study Forensic Science and Criminal Justice after his graduation next June.
Congratulations Mark Dammer!
