Over 700 pumpkins patiently waited to find their perfect match this past Thursday at Oakwood Primary Center. On a crisp fall morning, the staff at Oakwood carefully placed each pumpkin on the backfield. On their bus ride to school that morning, students were already thinking about what pumpkin would be just right and how they might decorate their native North American squash. And to the pumpkins' delight, kindergartners through second-graders emptied onto the fields to find the pumpkin of their dreams. As you can see from the photos, staff, students, and pumpkins all had a wonderful morning. A big thank you to the following Oakwood staff who assisted: Tom Montalbano, Christy Stiles, Liz Sousa, Donna Farkas, Donna Finnegan, Joyce Gardner, Dana Tafe, Courtney Galano, Marriol Torres-Banegas, Melissa Renda, Joanna Baumbach, Christine LeClaire, Luella Pinelli and Joan Lay.

Huntington Manor Fire Department visited Ms. Groe's Oakwood class to demonstrate fire safety. With the help of Firefighters Ron and Patrick, the children learned what to do in the event of a fire. They practiced “Stop, Drop, and Roll” and “Stay Low and GO!” The children were given the opportunity to use the fire hose and climb aboard the fire truck. The children enjoyed having the firefighters come into the classroom. They made the topic of fire safety easy to understand and not so scary!

Halloween BOO-tique returns as a HUGE success!

We continue to be inspired by the work of Whitman senior Daniela Pasquarello, who again coordinated a drive to bring Halloween costumes to students in need throughout our school district. Daniela reached out to caring community members and hundreds of generous South Huntington teachers to create a Holiday Boutique that allowed dozens of students to browse before proudly selecting that perfect costume for the big day. It was incredible to see the smiles and feel the power of good work as the school district community galvanized behind such a worthy common cause. We are truly blessed to have such fine students serving as role models in our South Huntington schools.

Happy Halloween!

Halloween events were on display throughout the district on a very busy October 31st. At the newly named James Kaden Administrative Offices, our SHIP Pre-schoolers were treated as they stopped into the many offices for a surprise. At Oakwood and Countrywood Primary Centers, hundreds of costumed children led huge parades as their families eagerly jockeyed for position, snapping photos of their little trick or treaters. The Stimson Middle School Band played a perfect set at Oakwood and the Walt Whitman Wind Ensemble did the same at Countrywood, providing Halloween themed music as the children circled the front of their school a couple of times to ensure everyone was able to enjoy their amazing costumes. The costumes brought tremendous joy and laughter to the staff, students, and parents. Later today, (4-6PM) is the always-amazing Safe Halloween at Walt Whitman High School. South Huntington students of all ages are invited as student decorated theme rooms provide fun activities and treats for all. Mrs. Nicolino and Mrs. Sullivan's second grade class at Countrywood had a spooktacular time making Halloween masks and trick or treating with the residents at Atria Senior Living. The seniors loved spending time with the children and admiring their Halloween costumes. We can't wait to go back and visit our new friends during the holidays!

South Huntington’s School Nutrition Services is beginning a campaign to show our children where some of our foods come from. Recently, honey was the hot topic and Beekeeper Marianne Dayton's presentation kept our Birchwood and Maplewood students enthralled. Ms. Dayton visited our two intermediate schools to teach the children where honey originates, how it’s made and how it’s harvested. The students learned a great deal about the interesting process. We thank Mrs. Sheila Buhse and the School Nutrition Services office for setting up this program for our students.
