Where Do You Get Your Inspiration?
On Tuesday November 1, 2016, Stimson Special Education teachers Shari Daniello and Meghan Musnug had the opportunity to attend a lecture by the renowned Dr. Temple Grandin. Being Life Skills teachers who have an undeniable passion for teaching students with special needs, this was an event that they couldn’t miss for anything. “Not only were we the first ones to register, but we sat in the second row, right behind the infamous Dr. Temple Grandin,” said Ms. Musnug. “When she took the podium, she captivated the audience making it very clear that she is a Doctor of animal science first, and has autism second.”
The following is Ms. Musnug’s account from their inspirational morning. “For close to an hour, Dr. Grandin shared what it means to have autism, and how we can teach these individuals functional skills to become as successful in life, as she has become. First and foremost she stressed that these children need to learn how to work. Students need to have a strong work ethic in order to be successful outside of the school setting. They need to be ‘stretched,’ meaning having responsibilities at home such as learning how to shop. Parents need to expose their children to the world. Rather than hang out in virtual reality, Dr. Grandin says kids need to limit their video games and get out and play. Learn to socialize and engage in meaningful activities. This seminar was followed by a live question and answer session. All in all, this was an experience we will never forget.”
Thank you Megan Musnug and Shari Daniello.
Temple Grandin, Ph.D., is now the most accomplished and well-known adult with autism in the world. Her fascinating life, with all its challenges and successes has been brought to the screen. She has been featured on NPR (National Public Radio), major television programs, such as the BBC special The Woman Who Thinks Like a Cow, ABC's Prime Time Live, The Today Show, Larry King Live, 48 Hours and 20/20, and has been written about in many national publications, such as Time magazine, People magazine, Forbes, U.S. News and World Report, and New York Times. Among numerous other recognitions by the media, Bravo Cable did a half-hour show on her life, and she was featured in the best-selling book, Anthropologist from Mars. (Excerpted from http://templegrandin.com/).
She has authored over twenty books, including Thinking in Pictures, Emergence: Labeled Autistic, The Way I See It, and The Autistic Brain.

Whitman Student’s to Begin Summer Research
A good number of Whitman student’s will begin summer research projects at Mount Sinai, Brookhaven National Lab, Farmingdale University and Stony Brook University this summer.
Rising 10th grader Alina Naseer has been accepted to Brookhaven National Laboratory's highly competitive STEM Summer Institute. For 4 weeks this summer, Alina will work with BNL researchers to explore topics in physics, biology, energy, engineering, scientific computing and environmental science, culminating in a poster presentation at Brookhaven at the end of the summer.
Rising 10th grader Subhana Zafar has been selected for an internship at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai this summer, working with researchers to investigate environmental factors that impact cancer rates. The internship has a unique public outreach component, and Subhana's experience over the last two years as an intern in the offices of the Huntington Breast Care Action Coalition (HBCAC) has uniquely prepared her for this. Subhana currently participates in Fred Feraco's research class.
Rising 11th grader Camilo Vazquez will be doing research on galaxy clusters with Farmingdale University Astrophysicist Dr. Edmond Douglass.
In addition, the following students are working throughout the summer with Dr. Teng from Stony Brook University, using “Big Data” to conduct research on deep learning: Heather Abbene, Stephanie Ross, Nyara Choudhury, George Link, Liam Rea, Amna Khwaja, Shaan Khan, Ashar Farooq and Stephen Hong.

There are Many Things I Am Thankful For
At Countrywood Primary Center, Ms. Workman’s first-graders invited their parents to a great Thanksgiving celebration. The children entertained their parents by singing songs like “Wake Up Little Turkey,” “Five Fat Turkeys, and “There are Many Things I Am Thankful For” led by music teacher Mr. Slawitsky. Ms. Workman, herself an accomplished flute player, added a nice accompaniment to Mr. Slawitsky’s piano. With their tom-tom drums and recorders, the students had a great time playing their instruments. Following the performance, each student stood up and told his/her parents what they were thankful for. What a great event to get everyone in the spirit of Thanksgiving.
Congratulations to our talented first-graders in Ms. Workman’s class: Hannah Andre, Madeline Bush, Dakota Cannon, Ayla Derin, Alexa Draser, Alexa Gaitan, Stella Glazer, Abigail Liclican, Milan Montour, Krisha Patel, Alicea Rekha, Lily Sarno, Marion Scala, Andrea Teixeira, Giovanni Aguilar, Ethan Andersen, Michael Barton, Wilmer Benitez Flores, Jonathan Gonzalez Rosa, Elijah Imhof, Brandon Jessup, John Padovan, Muqbil Quorishi, Ayden Reaves, and Patrick Welch.

Dimes for Diabetes raised over $1500
During the month of October, students and staff at Maplewood Intermediate School joined together to raise awareness and funding for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). Type 1 Diabetes, also called T1D is an autoimmune disease that usually strikes in childhood, adolescence, or young adulthood, and lasts a lifetime.
Just to survive, people with T1D must take multiple injections of insulin daily or continually infuse insulin through a pump. Diabetes currently affects 371 million people worldwide and is expected to affect 552 million by the year 2030. The fundraising included students filling collection containers with spare change as part of the “Dimes for Diabetes” theme, as well as staff purchasing paper sneaker cutouts. Collectively, Maplewood raised over $1500! The following four classes were recognized for each raising over $100 - Mrs. Trapani, Mrs. Simonds/VanKirk, Mrs. Dolan-Manner, and Ms. Vargas. Maplewood is hopeful that through their efforts, they will help turn Type 1 Diabetes into Type None.

May Athletes of the Month
Sarah Glaser, and her teammates on the softball team, got off to a rough start at 1-4 but even before the weather turned, Sarah and her Lady Wildcats turned their season around, winning the next 14 out of 15 games and launching them into a memorable playoff run. “We worked really hard and took third place in Suffolk County,” said our Molloy bound softball star. Sarah also played basketball at Whitman, she is a member of the Girls Leaders Organization, the National Honor Society, volunteered for the Booster Club, and is involved in numerous community service opportunities. She ended her high school softball career as All-County.
Camilee Getchell had a solid lacrosse season. “While we struggled in many of our games, we saw improvement in the program overall,” said Camilee, acknowledging the rebuilding goal. “We had one of our best year in a long time, and I’m excited for the programs future with the players we have.” Camilee also played soccer and basketball at Whitman. She is a member of the Girls Leaders Organization, and the National Honor Society. Camilee was awarded All-Division for the 2017 season and will be attending the University of Alabama in the fall.
It surprised Whitman junior Aiden Smyth to have such a strong spring track season. He took the winter off with an injury, and came back even stronger winning most of his races that included the 1600m and 3200m and placed 4th in the division for both events. He continued his success in the county meet placing in the top tier and finished in the top ten for the state qualifier. Aiden was awarded All-County for the 1600m. Aiden runs cross-country in the fall and winter track. He is a member of the National Honor Society, the World Language Honor Society and keeps a busy volunteer schedule. We should see plenty more of him as he enters his senior year in the fall.

Students participating in the Career Pathways Program at Walt Whitman High School will develop transferable skills they will need to transition from high school to the next level in their Career Pathway, whether it is the workplace, community college, vocational school, or a four-year college program. The value of proficiency on common, frequently-required skills is increasing. “By training our students to communicate, solve problems, and present their ideas, we will be developing a well-rounded student whose skills will be in demand in the workplace now and beyond 2020. A Message from the Superintendent and Principal Murphy Regarding Graduation
Hi All:
I hope all is well.
We wanted to take a moment to touch base regarding the logistics oftomorrow’s Commencement Ceremony. At this point the hourly weather forecasts are predicting a very strong possibility of rain forSaturday morning. While our sincere hope is that the forecast changesbefore tomorrow, it is incumbent upon us to plan for all eventualities. The bottom line is that we want very much to have the ceremony outdoors and fully understand the limitations that indoor seating places upon families. However, we can do little to control conditions and a rainy outdoor ceremony, or worse yet, pop-up storms during the event, is actually more problematic than an indoor event. Therefore, we are hoping for the best, but simultaneously preparing for both an outdoor and indoor ceremony. That dual preparation will allow us to wait until earlytomorrow morningto make a definitive call. Our plan is to meetat 7 a.m., examine conditions and forecasts, and reach out to families via voice call, email, website, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
Again, we are hoping for the best but remain cognizant of the fact that steady rain is predicted for the morning. In the event of an indoor ceremony, graduation will be held in theNorth Gymnasiumwith simulcasting in the Performing Arts Center. The3 White Ticketswill provide entry to thegymnasiumand the3 Blue Ticketsto thePAC.
Please know that we understand the importance of this special day and want very much to provide a wonderful experience for all of our esteemed graduates and proud parents. With that said, please accept our heartfelt congratulations on a job very well done.
We will be in touch earlytomorrow morning.
Be well,
Dave Bennardo, Superintendent of Schools
John Murphy, Principal, Walt Whitman High School

Spring Sing Along @ Oakwood
As they prepare for their graduation to 3rd grade at Birchwood, Oakwood’s 2nd grade singers, under the direction of Ms. Luella Pinelli, entertained their schoolmates and parents at their annual spring sing-along recently. The students sang a collection of songs that featured their ukuleles. A special treat was the addition of renowned singer/songwriter Ms. Marla Lewis who wrote the song "We All Laugh in the Same Language." Ms. Lewis visited Oakwood’s music classes and made a video of the children singing the song. “I was so thrilled and delighted to see my song come to life with your wonderful singers,” said Ms. Lewis. “The children performed beautifully, and you [Ms. Pinelli] led the ensemble like a real pro."
Congratulations to the following classes and good luck next year at Birchwood. Mrs. McLaughlin and Mrs. Wright's, Mrs. Farkas, Mrs. Herrera, Ms. Villanueva and Ms. Winkoff's, and Mrs. Pica classes.

November Video Blog
The latest edition of the South Huntington Video Blog is now posted on our YouTube channel.
You can viewiton the web at: https://youtu.be/8s509qdPMoA
Hi All
Below, please find the written letter that accompanies today's holiday video address from Dr. Bennardo, Wildcat Marching Band Drum Major Paige Tortorice and Whitman Natural Helper and Theater Company member Julio Taku.
From Dr. Bennardo –
I want to take a moment to wish the members of our school community a very Happy, Healthy Thanksgiving holiday. These next few days provide the perfect opportunity to dial back the pace, tune out the national and local news, and give thanks for the countless blessings in our lives. I can think of no better way to honor this amazing community and beautiful nation than to thank you all for your warm support and genuine friendship that you provide to our students, faculty, and staff. South Huntington is a remarkable place, and the bonds that bind us and make our learning family special are unbreakable and forever proud. I hope your Thanksgiving table is filled with love and you are touched by the magic of family and friends alike.
From Paige Tortorice –
Hello! I’m Paige Tortorice, a senior at Walt Whitman High School. As we come to the end of the first quarter of the year, we’re entering a holiday that’s meant to be full of gratefulness, friends and family. It’s also a perfect time to relax and reboot for the next month ahead! This year so far has been full of many successful events throughout the community, and there are only more to come! I hope you all have a wonderful Thanksgiving full of delicious food and great memories!”
From Julio Taku -
The second quarter is my favorite quarter of the year; not just because it allows a fresh start in all classes, but because it marks the holiday season. As the leaves turn their red, yellow, brown, and amber colors for the fall season, only to be succeeded by the pure white of snow, let us keep in mind all the moments, people, and adventures from this year. You know as well as I do, that New Year’s Eve will be here in the blink of an eye. So let's take this time to be thankful for all the things that have brought us where we are as a community and individuals.
A Combined Concluding Thought -
So from our family to yours, please enjoy a bright, beautiful holiday weekend and remember the blessings that each and every member of our community brings to this special learning family. Be well and have a great Thanksgiving.

Walt Whitman High School Class of 2017 Graduation
You couldn’t have asked for a better morning in which 465 Whitman seniors began the next step in their lives. Calling for a ninety-minute delay on a rainy Saturday morning gave everyone, including Mother Nature, the time they needed to enjoy a perfect crystal blue sky by 11:30 a.m. Students, guests, and family members heard retiring Board of Education President Jim Kaden’s last commencement speech, District Superintendent Dr. David Bennardo, and Whitman Principal John Murphy also gave their commencement message on this eighty-seventh Walt Whitman Graduation. The two-hour ceremony also featured Whitman’s Senior Class President Dylan Diamond; Salutatorian, Karthi’ Mayilvahanan; and this year’s Valedictorian, Shelbi Wuss; who, along with their 2017 senior classmates, began a new and promising chapter in their young lives. The Walt Whitman Symphony Orchestra, led by Mr. Matthew Hoffman ushered the seniors in and out of the ceremony that also featured the Whitman choir led by Mr. Steven Altinel.

Miller is a Greentree Graduate
This past year Silas Wood teacher Natalie Miller had the most incredible experience being part of the educational classes given through the Greentree Foundation. This yearlong program taught teachers how to take a step out of the classroom and integrate ecological scientific principles through teaching outdoors. Teachers learned through hands-on training and benefited from the expertise of some of Long Island's best professors and ecologists. The program was a week long, starting last July and then periodically meeting throughout the school year. The educators that participated were very impressed by the beauty of the grounds, the thoughtful lessons that integrated Next Generation Science Standards, the variety of educational materials that were provided for each educator, and even the exquisite meals created daily by an in-house chef. Natalie's hope is to educate teachers about the program. Graduation was held June 15th, and Natalie feels very blessed to be afforded such a life-changing experience.
