Character Highlights our April Athletes of the Month

Both of our April Athletes of the Month have a couple things in common. Both are pitchers who made an impact on their team, but more importantly, both possess positive character traits that landed them on Athletic Director Dr. Jim Wright’s ‘Personal Hero’ list at the recent sports awards evening. Congratulations to Taylor Epstein and Brett Maier. For Taylor, the softball team began their season at 1-4, but they all knew they had so much more and dedicated themselves to working hard. As the team meshed the fruits of their hard work paid off, winning 13 of their final 14 regular season games. “We got together as a team and talked about not making the little mental mistakes,” said Taylor. “We knew if we worked hard and did all the little things right, we could make the playoffs and go far.” Taylor calls her own game and she was spot on this season. “When I’m out there I do my best to find their weaknesses,” said the All-County Pitcher. “I just want to do all I can to help our team win.” Taylor ended her high school career with a 15-6 pitching record that included the playoffs. She will be attending Boston University in the fall and is undecided on both her major and if she’s going to tryout for the softball team. Brett Maier stayed away from pitching since he injured his arm as a sophomore, but Coach Keith Barrett knew he had what it takes and approached him early in the year, getting a positive response. April was a good month and Brett pitched about 28 innings, ending with a 1.5 earned-run-average. Brett was instrumental in the team winning more games than the prior year and keeping the program on the upswing. “We missed the playoffs by one game so that was tough because we were playing well as a team,” said the St. John’s bound senior. As a Division 1 team, St. John’s is ranked 20th in the Nation in Baseball, so Brett is undecided if he will be making that leap. When asked about his favorite part of being at Whitman, Brett decided instantly that the diversity of personalities in his teachers that he has throughout the day makes Whitman a great place.

Learning with LEGOS

Using individual class sets of LEGO Building Bricks, and following lessons provided by LEGO Education, Mrs. Herrera’s Second Grade Dual Language class has been playing and learning in a very creative and fun way! Each lesson promotes collaboration, communication, creativity, critical thinking and problem solving. The children are given a task; for example, build something that will help people cross a river. Using only the LEGOS in their kit the children completed the task and then were asked to explain and describe what they had built, and why they think it will work. The children work as teams, pairs, and individually to create and achieve the lesson’s goal. The lessons cover all area of the curriculum; there are language arts, math, and even science lessons. Creativity, expressive language, and problem solving are always part of the lesson. At the end of each lesson the children are asked to build Mr. Learnie. To complete Mr. Learnie every piece in the set must be used, in this way the children know that each set is complete and ready for the next time. The children have had a wonderful experience with this project. Some of the more experienced LEGO students are great helpers and it is always a team effort to achieve the goal. ESL students gain so much exposure to language because vocabulary and descriptions are a vital part of each lesson. Way to Go Mrs. Herrera, these Dual Language students are preparing themselves to be their generation’s problem solvers and engineers.

Mrs. Nicolino and Mrs. Sullivan’s second grade class at Countrywood had a delicious Book Tasting Party! The students were introduced to a variety of new books that spanned many exciting genres. They were served biographies, mysteries, poetry books, fantasy books, non-fiction titles and fairy tales all on fancy silver trays! Students started at one genre table and rotated through all of the tables during the event. They were given a “taste” of each genre and an opportunity to share their thoughts and feelings about these new books with their friends. The theme was “Try it! You might like it!” and the students were so excited to see so many new books! They also loved seeing their classroom transformed into a fancy restaurant with red and white-checkered tablecloths, vases of flowers, baskets of breadsticks, and even candles on each table! The reviews are in… and the Book Tasting Party was given four stars by Mrs. Nicolino and Mrs. Sullivan’s second grade students!
