A student team from Walt Whitman High School has won the prestigious 2015 STEP Regional Science Bowl Competition, and are advancing to the national finals. The science bowl is a "Jeopardy!"-style competition with a four-division, round-robin format. In Saturday’s regional competition, held at Farmingdale University, the Whitman team answered difficult questions in Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Earth and Space and Mathematics. Their first place win means they receive a fully-paid trip to Washington, D.C. for the National Science BowlFinals, which will take place April 30-May 4. There they will compete alongside the Farmingdale High School Team that won the Regional Science Bowl in Brookhaven earlier this year. As a first year team, the students, coaches and parents who cheered them on were thrilled by the win. The students, most of whom already participate in multiple academic activities and sports, worked hard to prepare for the competition, and have even more preparation and hard work ahead of them. The Office of Energy's National Science Bowl is one of the nation's largest science competitions. Congratulations to our students; Ahmad Ejaz, Mark Meneses, Gaby Ramirez, Zenab Ojibe, and Omar Ramos, their coaches and teachers, and especially their families who support all the hard work required to compete at such a high level.
