We are very fortunate in South Huntington to have a faculty and staff that nurtures our children and practices their crafts both in and out of the traditional classroom walls. It is with this understanding that we congratulate Walt Whitman English Teacher, Matt Kindelmann, who was named as Best Columnist by the New York Press Association in their 2014 Better Newspaper Contest. “This award means a lot to me as an English teacher as well as moving back to Smithtown where I was born and raised,” said Mr. Kindelmann. “Being able to write for my hometown paper and being a journalism and creative writing teacher means I get to share my experiences with my students about my writing process and what it’s like to be published.”
Mr. Kindelmann is often published in Long Island newspapers and writes a regular column for The Smithtown News called "Road Less Traveled.” Interestingly, this award-winning writing is often based on experiences associated with our journalism, creative writing, and media-analysis classes. “Many times I show my creative writing students my drafts and stress the importance of rewriting. I often tell them there is no such thing as good writing, only good rewriting.”
Congratulations Matt Kindelmann. It is really a pleasure to know that such a talented professional is teaching our South Huntington children.
