Whitman Cheerleaders Return Nationally Ranked

For the first time in school history, the Walt Whitman Varsity Cheer Team made it to the finals in the National High School Cheerleading Championship (NHSCC). The Wildcat team started out the season qualifying at the Pocono Regional competition. Thousands of teams from across the nation competed and their regional competitions for a spot to make it to the big championship event held at Walt Disney World® Resort in Orlando, Florida. Walt Whitman High School ranked 3rd at the Pocono Regional’s. Atthenational's, thevarsity team started out competing against the top 54 teams for the small varsity Division 1 in the preliminary round. Walt Whitman Varsity Cheer moved onto the semifinals where 27 teams were chosen to advance. They competed again that same night in an attempt to move forward to the finals, and for the first time ever, succeeded, becoming a finalist among 19 of the most elite teams in the Nation. Walt Whitman Varsity cheer finished out the National Championships ranking 17th in the Nation. The NHSCC is nationally televised on ESPN and ESPN2 to over 100 million homes and 32 countries nationwide this year. The team is bringing home a large trophy to make Walt Whitman High School and South Huntington proud. The girl’s season does not stop here; they are off to compete for the first time ever at the New York State invitational’s being held at Bay Shore High School on February 28th.
