Congratulations Girls Varsity Badminton. The team defeated The Stony Brook School 9-0 on Monday April 27th. MaryRose Stone, Eliza Wong and Heydi Ponce won in singles. Nikki Smith, Heather Kurasch, Jen Agell and Abigail Daniels led the way in doubles. If you have ever attended a badminton competition one of the things that strikes you right away is how both sides are having fun. When asked why he always gets such a large turnout to play Badminton, coach Wolff’s answer was simple: “If you're not having fun when your playing badminton your doing something wrong,” said Coach Wolff. “They play because its competitive, and they play because its fun.” With their latest win, the Lady Wildcats improve to 10-1 and remain the top-ranked team in Suffolk County. Winning is fun too!
The team’s only loss was to Half Hollow Hills who has won the County Championships for the past six years in a row. Whitman has been runner up 4 of the past 5 years. “I’m hoping this is our year to get over that hump and beat Hills,” said Coach Wolff. Before they get their chance against a perennial favorite, the Wildcats play 2nd ranked Smithtown East on Tuesday April 28th. Whitman won by a slim margin 5-4 back in March when the two teams last met. UPDATE!!! Whitman Defeated Smithtown East 6-3 on Tuesday evening and are now 11-1
Whitman’s #1 singles player is MaryRose Stone with a current 9-1 record. Next up in the #2 slot is Eliza Wong who is 9-1 and, sporting a 10-0 undefeated record, is Heydi Ponce. Elizabeth Silverman serves in the #4 slot and sophomore Casey Leonick anchors the singles squad at #5.
The Lady Wildcats doubles squad is equally strong and weighted in seniors. Nikki Smith and Heather Kurash anchor Whitman’s #1 doubles team. The #2 doubles team is Jen Agell and Abigail Daniels. The doubles team of senior Nicole Rowe and junior Misha Patel make a solid #3, and Whitman’s #4 doubles are juniors Christina Bogdani and Cheyenne Madrid.“This has been an interesting year in that we have a strong senior group, so I consciously took more underclassman to prepare to fill spots left after this year’s graduation,” said Coach Wolff. “Much to my surprise is that the developing young players are progressing much faster than I thought, and are ready to challenge the seniors for starting spots before the season is even out.”
