As sports records go, new ones are made every day, only to be broken again and again. So when Whitman track star Avery McKenzie triple jumped 44’ 9” this past week at the Suffolk County Division Track and Field Championships, the fact that it earned him the bronze medal in Division 1 wasn’t the highlight.
The highlight, we learned from track coach Rob Conroy, is that Avery’s jump was the best by a Whitman athlete since Hall-of-Famer Carlton Rowe. Carlton set the Indoor Triple Jump Record of 45’ 10.75” in 1993 and went on to become the Outdoor National Triple Jump Champion in 1995.
Congratulations Avery McKenzie, you’re catching up to one of Whitman’s greatest athletes.
