This past week, a group of Walt Whitman senior athletes were invited to attend a unique youth conference sponsored by the D’Brickashaw Ferguson Foundation. If D’Brickashaw Ferguson sounds familiar, it should for a couple reasons. First is that ‘Brick’ Ferguson is the New York Jets leading Offensive Left Tackle, and the second is that ‘Brick’s’ foundation was at Maplewood Intermediate school this past fall with their ‘Build A Bike’ Program.
Mixing in some athletic fun along with workshop sessions, senior athletes came together to attend workshops designed to help make their upcoming college experience more successful. “The topics in the workshops included financial information, educational tips and campus life,” said Whitman Coach Thomas Fitzpatrick, who led the Whitman delegation. The seniors were eager to learn helpful tips about what to expect in their freshman year of college, and attend workshops that provided useful tools to navigate the changes they are about to experience.
One of the highlights of the day was when the athletes got to stretch their muscles at the indoor football facility on the campus of Hofstra University. “The day concluded with the Brick Bowl Flag Football game,” said Mr. Toby Elmore, a Freeport PE teacher and D’Brickashaw Ferguson Foundation Board Member. “Teams were created by teaming up students from various schools and getting them to come together in fun competition. The winning teams received signed footballs from ‘Brick’ himself.”
Congratulations Albert Martinez, Gary Harris, Sean McEntee, Jordan Aiken, and Claude Cajuste for representing Walt Whitman and South Huntington and making your community proud. A big thanks goes out to Coach Tom Fitzpatrick, Mr. Toby Elmore and the D’Brickashaw Ferguson Foundation.
