Some very lucky students in South Huntington are getting ready to visit the state-of-the-art Microsoft Technology Center to experience the latest technology devices and touch experience. Our students and their teachers will participate in presentations about exciting programs offered by Microsoft and We Connect the Dots.“The district is fortunate to have a college and career coach like Mr. Rob Callahan, and a STEM coach like Ms. Marijean Scardapane, who work side by side to find opportunities for our students that empower and expose them to attend events like We Connect the Dots,” said Dr. Jared Bloom, Assistant Superintendent for Instruction and Curriculum. “Events like this allow students to explore and learn. They are exposed to so many opportunities at a corporation like Microsoft, where they can see the vast array of career opportunities, not just software programming, but careers in marketing, research, and sales to name just a few.”
Last year our students came away energized by the high-tech experience and what might be possible for their career future, and this year looks to be even more exciting. Microsoft has two days set aside, one for students in grades 6 to 8 and one day for students in 9 to 12. Led by Science Department Chairperson Mr. Marcus Maddy and a handful of dedicated teachers, South Huntington will bring 25 students to each of the two days. “There are skill sets that our students can learn in an environment like Microsoft that are not so easily duplicated in the classroom,” said Dr. Bloom. “Our students are so incredibly lucky to have this valuable and enriching partnership. The district is working on many other exciting opportunities to enrich our students' classroom experience, so stay tuned.”
Last year’s event was so successful, Microsoft, in conjunction with Connect the Dots, prepared a short video that featured several of our teachers and students engaged in the technological experience.
