Whether she’s leading our students in making sandwiches for locals in need, or building homes in Nicaragua, Stimson special education paraprofessional Carol Werblin is a one-woman volunteer machine. In all fairness she has support, mostly because her energy for helping others is contagious, and how can you say no with all the good that she accomplishes.“Over the last 10 years, I have been involved in a program called Peace and Plenty Food Outreach,” said Ms. Werblin. “Every Monday night we prepare more than 180 sandwiches at the Congregational Church in Centerport.” School children from the Huntington area, including many from South Huntington volunteer in Centerport, collecting community service hours for their effort. These sandwiches get distributed to several different organizations in the local Huntington community that service our homeless and youth.
Recently, Mr. Rentz's vocational class at Stimson Middle School helped in preparing sandwiches that were delivered to Tri-CYA for their after school program. When the sandwich making for Tri-CYA was done, the class helped Ms. Werblin with another of her projects, this time with the Huntington Interfaith Homeless Initiative (HIHI).
HIHI is a group of faith-based institutions working with Family Service League to ensure that no one is left outside during the coldest months of the year. Mr. Rentz's vocational class seemed to enjoy their cooperative interaction in providing 30-bagged lunches for the HIHI program that night. But the class wasn’t finished; they were back the next week making and bagging 40 sandwiches that Ms. Werblin distributed to the Manor Field Family Center.
Ms. Werblin took a break recently to accept a prestigious honor at the annual Tri-CYA Awards dinner in recognition for her community service. “There is a genuine sense of empathy and true spirit of community responsibility fueling collaborative work throughout our school district,” said Superintendent Bennardo in his weekly newsletter. “We were thrilled last week to see Ms. Carol Werblin, and Mr. David Perkins recognized by the Tri-CYA for their outstanding service to the community. It was a genuine pleasure to see two of our very own highlighted for their dedication and service to children.”
We really have a very special community, filled with caring and compassionate people! Thank you Carol Werblin for all that you do.
Stay tuned as we highlight Mr. David Perkins next week.
