Congratulations to our May Athletes of the Month Linda Powell and Sean McEntee. “When the season began we were very optimistic, unfortunately we got off to a tough start,” said the Wildcats centerfielder Sean McEntee. The bumpy beginning had its effect on the team’s chemistry- it made them stronger. In fact it helped solidify the group as a whole, building character as they struggled to get into the win column. “I know I had a rough start, but as we got into May, and I worked on my swing, things started to come around and I was hitting in every series,” said McEntee, who was also one of the teams co-captains and excelled academically while at Whitman. Sean also played football until an injury forced an early exit so that he could heal in time for Baseball. Sean will be studying business next fall at The Ohio State University.
When the Lady Wildcats Softball Pitcher Linda Powell looks out towards the plate, she easily sizes up the challenge in front of her as well as any runners on the bases, so it’s not surprising that next fall Linda will be off to Fordham University to concentrate on Urban Studies, hoping to become an Urban Planner. “Urban Planning is interesting to me because it utilizes many different subjects, all of which are important factors in the big picture,” said the Whitman senior who has excelled academically as well as on the pitchers mound.
The girls softball team made it to the third round of the playoffs this season and Linda threw two 1–hitters in both of the first two games of those playoffs. Undoubtedly the highlight was knocking off the #3 seed West Islip. “We had really good chemistry this year, the girls all got along really well off the field, and that played a big part in our success,” said Powell. “This was the most talented team I’ve played with while at Whitman.”
Congratulations Linda and Sean on being our May Athletes of the Month.
